Airbag Defects Lead to Recall of Nissan Vehicles

More than 54,000 2012 Nissan Versa units have been recalled by Nissan due to defective airbags. According to a CBS report, these vehicles have airbags that may unexpectedly deploy when the door is shut forcefully. Nissan North America points to the degradation of the connector pins side impact sensors. The unexpected deployment of the seat-mounted and curtain airbags puts the driver and passengers at risk of injury.

Owners need to take their recalled vehicles to the dealers so that a new jumper harness can be installed to replace the side impact sensors at no cost. You can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-88-327-4236. You may also check safercar.gov to find out if your vehicle has been included in the recall. All you need to do is enter your vehicle identification number (VIN). So far, there have been no reported accidents, injuries or fatalities as a result of this defect.

Nissan Vehicle Recall Figures

According to the Department of Transportation, United States automakers set a record in 2016 by recalling over 53 million vehicles due to safety-related problems/defects. That year surpassed the all-time-high of 51 million recalled vehicles that was set just the year before (2015). Even more disturbing is the fact that there are still around 63 million vehicles that have been recalled and have yet to be repaired. In Obama’s last year as president, there was a 7% increase in the number of recall campaigns (927).
