The second month of 2025 was also the last month in the lives of more than a dozen San Diegans who were killed in traffic accidents.
The first deadly incident occurred on the first day of the month, when a pedestrian died near the Pershing Drive off-ramp of Interstate 5 at 17th and B street. The last one occurred on February 23, when one person was killed after being thrown from an off-road vehicle on SR 54 near Engineer Springs.
In addition to the seventeen February incidents, four additional traffic deaths that occurred in January were reported.
According to the SANDAG Traffic Safety Dashboard, San Diego County is on track for 216 traffic deaths, fewer than the 284 reported in 2022 and the lowest annual number since 2014.
As of the 2020 census, the population of San Diego County was 3,298,634, making it the second-most populous county in California and the fifth-most populous in the United States. Most of these people live along or near the county’s seventy miles of coastline.
