A runaway driver struck and killed a 70-year-old man as he crossed the street on Sunday, April 8, 2025, around 6 p.m. in the 5000 block of Brookburn Drive.
The victim was with his wife and dog when his wife crossed Brookburn Drive ahead of him and waited for him to follow.
According to the medical examiner’s office, the victim allowed two cars to pass before walking into the street when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The impact of the crash threw him onto the roadway.
When authorities arrived on the scene, he was unresponsive and not breathing, according to the San Diego Police Department. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The dog was also hurt in the crash and was taken to a veterinarian by bystanders, per SDPD. The pet’s condition is unknown at this time.
Carmel Valley’s name comes from the Catholic Sisters of Mercy, who named a nearby hill Mount Carmel when they came to San Diego in the 1890s after receiving 1,000 acres from the McGonigle family. The Sisters then established Mercy Hospital to provide for the family’s healthcare needs. When Robert Stevens acquired the farm in the 1940s, he changed its name to Mount Carmel Ranch. The name Carmel got attached to the valley, at first starting with the lower portion of the McGonigle Canyon. At roughly the same time, the Sisters of Mercy expanded the facility to include the Carmel Valley Cemetery.
