San Diego, CA – Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Scooter Rider in La Jolla

A 25-year-old San Diego man is dead after he fell off his electric scooter, landed in a traffic lane, and was run over by an unknown driver.

The victim, who was riding a 2023 Yamaha XMAX sport scooter in the northbound No. 1 lane of Torrey Pines, was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and collided with a concrete jersey barrier, according to the San Diego Police.

The force of the impact ejected the victim from the scooter and threw him into the southbound No. 2 lane. An unknown vehicle ran over the man and fled the scene, police said. The scooter rider died at the scene from his injuries.

This wreck, which occurred on April 12, 2025, was not an isolated incident. In August 2024, a woman suffered life-threatening injuries after losing control of her motorcycle and crashing into the median. “Slow down because it comes up on you really quick,” one witness mused. “From the moment you turn at UCSD until you pass the Shell gas station, literally that’s like the red zone of just like stay attentive.”

La Jolla is much more than a scenic oceanside community. It’s home to some of the most prominent institutions of learning in SoCal, such as the University of California, Birch Aquarium, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Research, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
