Investigators believe a driver mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake moments before his vehicle careened through a crowded Del Mar park on February 23, 2025.
Witnesses say crowds of people were enjoying the nice day when they heard a sign crack, then screams, as people rolled out of the way.
San Diego Sheriff deputies responded to the scene. Two people were hit by the vehicle and taken to the hospital with reported non-life-threatening injuries, authorities say.
Del Mar was first settled in the early 1880s by Theodore M. Loop, a railroad official, and his wife Ella. Ella gave the site its name, inspired by Bayard Taylor’s poem “The Fight of Paso del Mar.” In 1885, Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres from Enoch Talbert, with visions of building a seaside resort for the rich and famous.
