Mercenaries have been used successfully and not so successfully by hundreds of nations throughout history. But in today's world with so much regard for laws and "Rules of Engagement" there needs to be far more oversight or no use at all.

What mercenaries ?
mercenaries are banned under international law.
The US has never outsourced the US military to anyone.
Security contraters are security guards.
They do not do military missions, they do not do combat operations.
Most of them do not even work for the military, they work for the State Department or private corporations guarding people.

Too costly and I think it should be made illegal- as if we do not already pay enough for our defense. Not sure what the Geneva Convention says about this but it almost seems that these are not unlike the very, criminal combatants that we are fighting, essentially a group fighting under their own codes and laws and with vast discretion to do so.

The US, as well as other countries, has always used mercenaries.
The current problem is overuse and lack of over-site. In other words, they're costing too much and causing trouble.
