kinda. it is for people who either feel the need to serve or are very poor. usually people will come in right out of high school, so they arent educated.

It's opinion I .

If you are in it to advance and you are doing it because you are loyal and don't mind going to Iraq. It can be very good. You are an "army brat" you may have seen similar advantages. Financial, life experience. The Army is no place to be if you do not fit in.e.g., you're good with weapons, you are very orginised, and you can take orders all the time. Talking from expreience.

Everyone who is able to serve should serve a few years.
You seem uncommonly illiterate for someone from the UK? Does your soldier dad take you to the grenade range and use you for an aiming point?

Sometime after World War II; possibly around the time of the Korean War, the military ceased to be a prestigious occupation in the United States. It is largely seen as a refuge for people who are happier to let others do their thinking for them, and with that perception it very likely has become so.
It might have recovered had it not been for the war in Viet Nam and the bone-headed pensioners who were in charge of that conflict. But among the best kids from the finest universities, there's no particular attraction to the military. The military has been trying desperately, clumsily, to reverse this trend: they've been offering tuition benefits in an effort to attract college-educated people. But the benefits are limited and half-hearted; our Department of Defense is still inclined to think of their people as somewhere between corporate employees and cannon fodder.
As a very rough rule, the best and most ambitious career military people you'll find are either in aerospace positions or are resume-motivated, knowing that military service is helpful if you wish to go into politics. But the military fell out of the upper class in the US quite a few years ago.

The most important job you can do in my opinion is serve in the military. Our soldiers put their lives on the line every day so that idiots like the girl you were talking to have freedom. It takes true honor to do what they are doing and true stupidity to say what that girl said. My whole family is military and they all have college degrees. I bet their GPA's were higher than her's.

I would have to disagree with the "Girls" opinion of the Armed Forces. Many individuals who are very intelligent joined the Army or other areas of the armed forces to simplily fight for our country. Also many educational oppurtunties are available at no cost. In addition you get educational reimbursement for outside college as well as a GI Bill which helps with mortgaging a home. I was in the military and became a medic. I was at the top of my High School class. One of my best friends, was in the military, is now a Doctor with no student loans to pay. Therefore it is my opinion that joining the armed forces is an intelligent decision for some.

I've been in the USARMY for goin on 4 years, I love the ARMY.
But...
The ARMY has relaxed allot of rules and regulations to get more people to join.
I'm an infantryman, and lately I've been seeing allot more weak bodied PlayStation face worthless air-wasting excuses for "soldiers" comin in.
Unfortunately the ARMY has gotten bigger, and needs bodies.
The worst part is how much money they give these worthless people. I met this weakbodied private who got 30 grand for the privilege of AIRBORNE and RANGER school. What did he do?
Failed out.
As for intelligent, yea there are allot of morons in this ARMY.
But there are allot of good people too. Don't get me wrong, I love the ARMY and I think it can be a good choice for some people.
I just hope the ARMY becomes more selective of the recruits.
