OK, so you're talking about the internment camps established in the early 1940s for Japanese-Americans, right?
The whole concept behind that was based on fear. Japan attacked us and the American public, as a while, didn't quite know how to react. The average American didn't know a whole lot about the Japanese people. Ignorance turned to fear. Americans felt that Japanese people in America would turn on them and begin supporting Japan, so they established camps to contain them until the war was over.
This did not happen so much with German or Italian Americans because it was more difficult to determine who they were based on looks. Germans and Italians could blend in more with the American population due to the european features of most Americans.
What the US did to the Japanese-Americans was wrong and was a violation of the US Constitution. It wasn't tragic in the sense of mass genocide that was going on in Europe or is currently happening in southern Asia or Central Africa, but it was unfortunate, nonetheless.
