You will be a natural distraction for most serviceman you work with and the last thing they need is to be distracted from their job. What if your assigned to man a day/night post in a foxhole somewhere in Afghanistan with a straight guy? Don't you think that's an automatic liability for your chain of command? 2010-07-14 02:51:05 +0000	You don't have anything really to worry about. There are plenty of guys already in the military who are pretty open about who they are. My unit has a couple of guys who are gay and im combat arms 13b, there has not been one issue either. With the shower, if you are open about being gay it might be a little weird for awhile but im pretty sure you like getting punched in the face as much as a straight guy likes being looked at while he showers, do your thing and get out of the shower just like everyone else. Also the main problem people see with allowing gays to serve openly in the military is that you have to act like a solider in and out of uniform and people don't want to see the extremely flamboyant(sp?) act like some do. As long as you act professional and know your job you will do fine. If you have any other questions feel free to email me. What Peter G said is not true at all man. If you know your job and can preform all your duties no one will care, even if they have to share a foxhole with you because when it comes down to it all that matters is that I know I have my battles back and they have mine. In the military we are professionals and if you cannot work with someone who has a different race, religion, creed, color, or sexuality they they are the ones who shouldn't serve. 2010-07-14 06:00:20 +0000	In Canada, all restrictions on gay servicemen/women were removed some time in the early 1990's (or maybe a bit before; I can't remember). It made basically no difference. One of my workers "came out," although in her case, pretty much everyone knew anyway. Military life often includes living in very close quarters. This can be men and women, as well as men and men, and women and women. As the idea of gender has less bearing on employment, if a section has 5 people, and one tent, it will not matter if 2 of the people are women, and one of the guys is gay. The section lives together regardless. In Canada, it caused virtually no fuss at all. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

2010-07-14 03:08:13 +0000	The showers in BCT were the gayest thing I've ever seen, and that was long before they started talking about lifting DADT. Lots and lots of exhibitionists, so if meatgazing is your thing, I'm sure you'll find someone who wants to show. I'm gonna get a lot of thumbs down, but you all know it's true. Soldiers are perverts, and every BCT platoon has at least one guy who keeps taking it out of his pants, or helicopters all over the latrine like he's a Black Hawk. Uh, is that what you wanted to know? If you just want to know about joining and being open, yeah, it'll be legal. There will still be some homophobes who think you're going to rape them or force them to take AIDS-infected blood transfusions on the battlefield, but there are several channels for dealing with them if their prejudice affects your career or the good order and discipline of the unit.
