All the character in the world isn't going to bring you back to life when you get blown to pieces over a war that doesn't matter in the first place.
You can get for yourself everything the military offers. You just have to work hard for it.

there are other ways to get an education.. most of my friends barely pay for school because they applied for so many scholarships.
trust me, the people that go in for schooling or a career usually dont like it. unless you want the 'military life' i doubt your gonna like it.
look into scholarships or learn a trade. be an apprentice for a union, 4 or 5 years makin ok money then when your a journeyman you make BANK.

why does it matter if you are in a "safer" job, all branches of our countries military have one purpose...to kill the enemies of our country. why would you place your safety above your countries. putting that aside, the military offers you many things, if you go into a combat job you will learn about responsibility, accountability and discipline. You may not have a direct civilian equivalent but strong the the previous traits. If you chose to do a support job (signal, mechanic, fueling) you already have job experience, and have certification that can be transfered to civilian education.
You can stay in for 20 years, retire at age 38 and continue working afterward while drawing retirement pay for the rest of your life.

This is a hard one to answer because you might not like the answer. I have known a number of retired millitary folks and I am not favorably inpressed with their characters. They tend to have an attitude like, "everything belongs to everybody", "tare it up, it's paid for" and the like. I have been telling young folks, "You don't have to go to college!" One can get a degree at college but that is no garrantee that you will get that high paying job you wished for. I've seen degreed perple planting trees with the rest of the grubby people who couldn't get a job elsewhere. I've seen preachers planting trees, which by the way, is hard work, but pretty good pay.
The millitary tends to take your indviduallity away from you. Folks who go over seas, don't have to be in combat to be affected from the chemicals that are everywhere from the weapons that have nuclear stuff about it. I think it's called UD.
YOu can get a pretty good education right from home, studying on your own. You can read 2 books per week, that is books of your choice. You can do research on the internet, try wikipedia. You can go on field trips and learn from others without having to go into debt. You could come work with me and I'd teach you everything that I know and I can do almost everything. Remember, when the money comes to no value, it is good to know how to do things that are practical and that you can do without money, folks will need you every where and will give you food for your skills, and food will be hard to get at any price. So think it through, live and do.
Blessings!

Absolutely! The military will pay for (I believe) up to $50,000 for college. You'll get great healthcare, benefits, and learn any number of trades. EVERY employer loves a military background.
A bit of advice though: After you serve, don't ever try to go to work for the Democratic Party, Code Pink, or the Sierra Club. They will NOT love your service to our country.
Best of Luck!

The only person that can answer that is you, but here is my two cents worth. There is a GI bill for both active and reserve. Active is better program. On active duty you can get reimbursed for college course taken while serving, percentage reimbursed is based on pay grade. This will not affect your GI bill. Check for enlistment bonuses, great to stash in the bank. Cousin was Navy nuclear, got $60K bonus for his first 6 yr hitch and $80k bonus for a second 6 year hitch, finished his last eight as a reservist. If you finish with 20 years active and reserved combined, you will get a pension and health benefits, great incentive giving the cost of health insurance. See a recruiter, weigh your options and choose wisely, worse case is you will not like military life, get in trouble, get a less than honorable discharge, this could hant you for a long time. Personal experience is thta I have enjoyed it. See alot of places that I would never have seen. Best of Luck!
