Should I go into the Marines or the Army Special Forces?
If I am in the Marines, I would be able to be open about my military life and Marines are respected everywhere as a superior group of soldiers. They are the first ones to go into combat. Guys in the Army Special Forces, however, are not allowed to tell anyone much about what they do and really have to keep their military lives a secret for the most part. I don't know if I would like that.

Being involved in counterterrorism operations and hostage rescues interests me, and the Special Forces are heavily involved with that type of stuff.

After I get out of the military, I would be interested in joining a government agency like the NSA or CIA. I figured that having experience in the military would only help me, but that is not the sole reason why I want to go into the military.

I was hoping to get answers from people in the military, not two political liberals who don't understand what the US military is about.

Marines are different than army SF

look at it this way, the Marine corps acts as a sledge hammer, special operations forces like SF act as a scalpel

First do not base your decision on a particular uniform. Learn more about what you want to do and what you are capable of doing - then join the service that offers a match.

Each service has propaganda machines touting their distinction. The USMC does a good job of indoctrination of its recruits and on the public as to what/who they are. "First to Fight" is a slogan taken from the days of sailing ships. Amphibious landings would be rare in todays strategies.

Most of all you become part of a team whose survival depends on each one carrying his/her load and willing to sacrifice. Not for wimps or wannabes.

Yes the Marine Corp is looked at as the superior group but that doesn't mean that the AF, Navy, Army, Coast Guard are not important. If the only reason you want to join the Marine Corp is because it will make you look like someone special then do not do it. If you want do to the Army Special Forces you need to go into the Army first. Especially if you have hopes to be in the CIA or something like it where your missions are kept secret my suggestion is something like Special Forces to give you an idea of what it is like to live a life where your job is kept secret. Good luck!

I love how people just hink they are going to "join" the Special Forces, Navy Seals, or the Super Ninja Night Kickers. You do not just 'join" the CIA. You apply, compete, train your butt off, compete, apply, pray, and with a little luck you might get in.

I think you need to join the marines, and if you're good enough, you're invited to the special forces... not sure how it works in the states though.

I suggest you start out in the USMC. You really do not know if Special Forces would be for you until you get some experience in the military. Used to be this way to get into SF anyway. Better to be more prepared.
You could always go for Rangers first. However, you should prepare big time for it.

I say go SF , enlist as 18x-ray . If your Special Forces you cant tell of your missions nor anything like that , but you can tell people your an SF Soldier . Just like the Marines say its nuthin like being one of the few and the proud. Being an ARMY SPECIAL FORCES SOLDIER holds more honor.

I would join the Marines. Sure, the work is harder, especially during boot camp at Parris Island/San Diego, but having been formerly engaged to someone in the Corps, I saw firsthand the brotherhood and sense of pride the Marines have that other branches seem to lack.

Good luck!

You have no idea what the military is about so let me learn you something young boy. First the army and marines are equally important to the protection of this country. And when I walk around with my Army Uniform and my Army Sergeant stripes I dare a civilian to tell me I am not as respected as a marine. You got that civilian.

Next, like the guy above me said you don't just join the special forces its a selection process and it not just sign on the dotted line. We have a SF recruiter on this post and my old battalion commander made it mandatory E4 to E5s between the ages of 18 to 25 go to his brief. It is not all blowing stuff up and shooting things these are last resorts. He said this; When you tell an Army infantry man to secure a house he will kick in the door an eliminate the hostiles. When you tell an Army ranger to secure a house he will kick in the door kill most of the hostiles and keep a few alive for questioning. When you tell Army SF to secure a house they will knock on the front door of the house, speaking the dialect and language of the occupants within win their hearts and minds and teach them to kill hostiles. That probably went over your head. So you should be a Marine we don't want you in the Army.
