Some of the immigrants will be serving for 20-30 years!
It would cut down on ILLEGAL imigration, though.
Now, this would have to be only for illegal immigrants that have been caught by the government multiple times to be fair to others. they should have a chance and be warned..
I dont think they want to be citizens anyway. cause theyd have to pay taxes otherwise

I think it would be great if we could do it that way.....However most of them do not speak english #1.......and #2 they would have to be trained (still costs us money).......#3 they may just go AWOL anyhow.......

No. We can't afford to pay the salaries, food, equipment, stationing, force protection, clothing, ammunition costs for our soldiers. That wouldn't change.
We would have to train all these guys, that take time and money. Then we send them to Iraq that takes time and money. And once they're there their year is almost up. It costs so much money to move a soldier from one base to another that when you do the soldier automaticaly signs up for two more years to make it worth the move.
We aren't having a problem getting soldiers to go to the war. Enlistment and retention is up because these soldiers are doing what they joined up to do.
The only man power shortage is guard units in states like California who are large enough and positioned so that they get natural disasters every year (Fires, floods, earth quakes), or states like Louisianna who needs their guard now.
Good thought but doesn't address the problem.

Think First nailed it. Absolutely correct on both counts. Non English-speaking foreign nationals aren't allowed to serve in US armed forces. He also addresses the responses about the casualty rate for US forces in Iraq. People think that being assigned to a combat area is the equivalent to a death sentence and that's not true. Less than 1 in 1,000 is not too bad odds on being KIA. Losses and funerals are sensationalized by the media. Not that fallen soldiers and their families shouldn't be recognized, but let's not dwell on it. We have an all-volunteer armed forces and everyone who joins is aware of the risks involved. Many times people let their emotions think for them rather than their intellect.

Good idea! You are a man of great knowledge. That is a big compliment coming from me, if you see my previous answers, you will see why it is so.
I'd say that we don't have a troop shortage exactly though. We have more men in our armed forces to do what we are already doing plus the work of the international coalition. It's personally politics that is in the way. We have generals in the military that say we need more troops, then you will hear a congressman saying he as a source that can vouch that we have enough men in Iraq and Afghanistan already.
Great idea I'd like to see used, we just have to cut through the red-tape bullshit now.

The GOP announced today that there would be no Immigration Bill this year. As to your idea, I would suggest that the tour of duty be four years and that upon completion of the tour they are granted full citizenship. By the way, that was the idea behind StarShip Troopers in Robert A. Heinlein's work.

The thing that makes our armed forces great is that it's an all voluntary force - they WANT to be there. If we force folks into, they won't care and it will show!

It may not cut down on the shortage of troops in our military but it might curb the illegal immigrant problem if all illegal immigrants were required to serve... Lets put it to the politicians and let the Democrats have a Purple Gourd conniption fit over the suggestion...

There is already a program in place to help people earn US citizenship through military service. It is a painful process and requires several years of service. I have personally known and served with people who have done this. I have, in fact served with some in Iraq. Also, participants in this program would not count as illegal immigrants.

The military service is not a means for those who have done wrong or are not useful members of society to be rehabilitated.
There are programs for foreign nations to join under certain conditions and qualify for citizenship.

You must be here legally be enter the armed forces, and you cannot have been convicted of any felony or most crimes and not over a certain amount of civil infractions. You also cannot have anything pending.(unlike the 60's and 70's ).

We already do. In fact just last month Bush was at a ceremony granting citizenship to a number of immigrants that served.
BTW, we don't have a troop shortage. We have all we need. And many will be coming home over the next year.

Do you know what it costs to become a LEGAL resident of the United States? Thousands of dollars. I'm not talking about getting a green card and working a job part time and then coming back to Mexico, I'm saying... actually applying at the immigration department, and waiting..not to mention it takes up to 10 years to even get an answer. You all need to read up on your facts. Would you want to wait 10 years to get citizenship, would your kids wait 10 years to eat, because you couldn't get decent money in the country you're living in? They come here for the money. Not to take over our jobs, homes, and land. Get a clue.
Frankly, I could care less. If we become a minority, so be it. Mexicans work harder, and longer than any white folk. I'm white, and I'll tell you what, I wouldn't do half the jobs that mexicans do, for 3 bucks an hour. If you want something done, and DONE right, and not half-assed, then hire a mexican. They are always on time, they always put in more than required, and they always do a great job. Of course there's very few of them, that don't do a good job.. which is like a good portion of americans ( unemployment line is proof enough ). The way I look at it is.. If we can send troops over to IRAQ to make their government more civilized and feed other countries, etc... and all the lovely things we do for 3rd world countries, then by god we should go over to Mexico, and assist them with getting the mexican residents in mexico higher paying jobs. Their jobs over there suck. That's why they all come here. We pay 9,10,11, 12 dollars an hour. If they paid more an hour over in Mexico, we wouldn't have them crossing our borders.

Better answer would be to make all Americans serve for 2 years in the military or 3 years working in a Community Service position in order to maintain their citizenship. Why be allowed to enjoy what everyone wants, if you won't earn your own birthright?!?! If we did this, then we could supplement your plan for those that want to help make this a better place.
First, though, we would have to have an education system that works so today's youth could pass the entrance exam (ASVAB). The majority of youth in California can not pass it (including college graduates).

People in Military Check this out...
ANybody Please Tell me the Ratio Between pure American and Non American in the Military??
Navy, Airforce, Marines, Army, Coast Guard, National Guards???
You will be shock.
These things you are talking about are already happening..
Immigrants fight American War because they believe for the cause. most of them believe that this the country of second chance. Land of the free.. home of the Brave.
So you cannot blame most of them in joining the military.. because most of them love this more than an American who takes everything for granted and whine about almost everything.
This is their chance to live a better life and get compensated for what they work hard for.
And your detailed proposition about a family member a year?
Your just making a bottle neck of problems.. sooner or later, that clog will either shut down or explode.
bad idea. Keep things as it is and if your trying to say that send immigrants overseas and Americans back... That is just wrong.
I remember the same idea back then, sending black people in the front lines... Its discriminating.
Think about this too..
Everything you have, you eat, you wear.. almost every inch of your identity has been touched and had been put piece by piece by an immigrant working for atleast a minimum wage to survive so that he could go back home with money to feed his family.
treat immigrants like this, discriminate and make their life a lot more harder than it is... You dont wanna know the possibilites that might happen.
think.

Hell, if I was in charge, I'd station the 82nd Airborne directly at the border... the illegals would never have a chance to become illegals! As far as the previous post saying something about everybody being immigrants, my people came from Scandanavia by way of Ellis Island. If they weren't seen as "fit," they were sent back. They certainly didn't scale any fences!
