Do you think its fair for the government to keep EX-military personnel money and G.I bill if theY get a oth?
|
This is assuming that they paid in their 1200 initially in their first year in the military and fulfill their 3 year G.I BILL contract... THIS IS THE TIME THAT THESE GUYS NEED THE G.I BILL THE MOST WHEN THEY;RE OUT OF THE MILITARY AND TRYING TO GET BACK ON THEIR FEET....MOST OF THESE GUYS ARE 22 IN THEIR EARLY TWENTIES, THEIR YOUNG, THEY MAKE MISTAKES, BUT I THINK THAT THE G.I SHOULD STILL BE THEIR AS LONG AS THEY DID THEY'RE 3 YEARS, DOESNT MATTER WHAT TYPE OF DISCHARGE YOU GET...i MEAN ITS COLLEGE AND THAT IS THE MAIN REASON PEOPLE SIGN UP...BUT THIS IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN...EVERYONE INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT IS WILLING TO STEP ON THE POOORS LEG TO MAKE MONEY AND TAKE ADVANTAGE....
I'M NOT LOOKING FOR ANY SMART A$$$ ANSWERS, I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO THINK OUT THE BOX AND NOT FROM A JUDGEMENTAL POV.
I KNOW MOST PEOPLE IN MILITARY LOVE TO BE ON A HIGH HORSE AND LOOK DOWN BUT IM JUST THROWING THIS QUESTION OUT THERE....WHATEVER.. Additional Details im saying at least give the person the 1200 dollars back that they paid to get in the g.i bill

Well, to be fair, maybe they should give the $1200 back to anyone who disenrolls from MGIB or is disenrolled.
Look, I know what the military can demand from you as well as anyone. It's really really hard sometimes. But getting an honorable discharge is really not that exceptional. You just do the right thing for three or four years, and they will give you one. Some people have been given an OTH unfairly - but not terribly many. The point of the GI Bill is to give people who do the right thing for three or four years (or 30 years for that matter) an advantage, a leg up in life.
Don't let this OTH derail your life. You can go to college. You are just starting out at zero. Fill out the FAFSA forms, apply for scholarships, take out Federal loans for whatever you can't get covered otherwise.
Thanks for the info BoatsMate.

Honestly, it is very fair to ask service members to do their duty and to meet standards in order to get benefits. Think of it this way, the gi bill pays about 1500 a month in tax free bah benefits. That alone is worth 54,000 dollars. It pays approximately 10,000 or more a year for 4 years of college tuition. That is 40,000 dollars add them together plus the money for books and fees and you have around 100,000 dollars worth of benefits that the vet does not have to pay back. Military members also receive pay, health care and medical benefits while they are in - although it is not a great deal of money. Why should a civilian tax payer have to pay for someone to go to school when they could not follow rules and do what they agreed to do for 4 years? Why would I do that when there are civilians who are having difficulties getting through school as well. I am a vet by the way.

It is absolutely fair. The government does not keep it a secret -- folks know going in that if they do not serve honorably they won't be eligible for benefits, including the GI Bill. Actions have consequences.

Yes it's fair. Who ever knew the rules going in. They gambled and got caught. Tough.

You don't state if you are asking about the Montgomery GI Bill or the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
There is NO FEE to enroll in the Post 9/11 GIB.
Even with the MGIB, if you did not use it within the allotted time period, even with an Honorable Discharge, you did not get a refund of the $1200.00
"THEIR YOUNG, THEY MAKE MISTAKES,"
Being young has nothing to do with it, even older folks make mistakes and pay for it in some way of another.
"...i MEAN ITS COLLEGE AND THAT IS THE MAIN REASON PEOPLE SIGN UP..."
If that is the "main" or only reason someone entered the military, they entered for the wrong reasons.
So yes, I think it is fair.

HDH,
Pell, Stafford, etc. types of federal loans are not allowed to someone with a OTH discharge.

People that end up with a OTH broke the contract they originally agreed to. When you sign up, go through boot, and to what ever school you are going through... the rules of the military are strictly enforced and repeated so that you understand there is no "i didn't know what i was doing was wrong". They knew ahead of time that if they didn't follow what they agreed to do on there own free will, that they would lose all benefits. I don't see this as anyone being taken advantage of just for the simple fact that during boot camp and your tech school, they cloth, feed, and teach you on there dollar which would cost way more that the 1200 that the service member paid. Like one of the other posters stated in 3 years it really is pretty hard to get kicked out unless you really don't know how to follow directions.

It's not unfair at all. You really have to work hard to get an OTH.

Not unfair at all. It is VERY hard to get anything other than an Honorable. No one forces a person to be a f*ck up. It isn't welfare. Benefits are usually attached to incentives and requirements...both in the military and the civilian world.
