Andy C had it spot on. Here in Britian, we are not obsessed witth grandious delusions of Rambo-esque men and women flying the stars and strips/union flag. To me, a hero is someone who did something truely brave in the face of true fear. Like running through enemy fire to pick up a child caught in the crossfire, diving on a live grenade using his body to shield the blast from his colleages.
One such hero was Sgt Willets of the Parachute regiment. In Northern Ireland he u8sed his body to shield women and children from an IRA bomb - he even had a song made about his story which was banned by the British government - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLlDOOVZ1HQ&feature=related
So, yes soldiers can be heros. But you are right - Doctors can be heros just as much, as can anyone.

hero is a big word.
Some say it applies to only some.
Some say it applies to all.
Only you can make the decision.
They put their life on the line everyday.
They risk everything..future children, nice life, being safe, to fight for your country.
Look at the Vietnam Vets. coming back and being called BABY KILLERS because the NVA/Vietcong used women.
Othere's called them heroes.

I dont care what is happening politically, but support our troops or get the F*** out of America. They give up so much for us, and willingly serve in some of the worst conditions, and spend long periods away from home. Some troops are an embarrasment to our nation but the actions of a few should not represent the whole, millions of brave men and women have served our great nation. Read a book such as "Lone Survivor", or "Heroes among us" and then tell me that the men in those books do not deserve to be called heroes.

Being a hero and being a soldier are not mutually exclusive. You can be a hero and a soldier, but you are not automatically a hero because you are a soldier. I'm a member of the US armed forces, but I don't feel I'm a hero. I can do things that are heroic, or I could become a hero, but by signing up to serve, it does not make me, or anyone for that matter.

When soldiers give their time, their blood and their lives for a just cause then they should be considered heroes and honored as such.
Unfortunately there are very few "just" wars, other than when an obvious aggressor attacks ones homeland or when another country is attacked unjustly.
It must always be understood that war is a political tool and as such the political context and motives must be understood. War always needs to be justified in political terms, at least in the last few centuries, before it can be undertaken by any country against another. Often the justifications are fabricated and those lies make the initiation or continuation of war a dirty war (one that is not just). That is also why those that win wars write the history of the was in a way that justifies their actions, and as they say, "The first casualty of war is the truth."
Often governments that enter a just war will find it necessary to begin lying or not telling the whole truth when the war starts to go badly in order to maintain the political support of the people, such as what is happening now with the Wiki-leaks scandal about the war in Afghanistan. The whole truth is not being told to the American people about the condition of the war or the involvement of the Pakistani military intelligence in supporting the Taliban.
Governments employ many tactics to fool the people and to try and blame someone else. False flag attacks(such as this recent S. Korean ship that was supposedly destroyed by a North Korean torpedo, or the Mossad bomb that killed the Lebanese minister and was blamed on Syria), provocations, sabotage, etc.
Soldiers who return from war do not feel like heroes, and it is not they who need to be heroes, but the people need heroes in order to justify that the war they supported was just. This is the bridge between civil and military society. The politicians designate heroes in order for them to focus the attention of the public on their illusions so they will not see the actual cost of war in human lives and suffering. The soldiers need to have some way to wash away the guilt they feel at killing and pillaging other people, crimes in any civil society. So heroes are created to maintain the link between civil society of laws, and the military society of destruction, so that people can pass from one to the other.
It has been observed that "no one wins war, some only loose more than others". The creation of heroes is an IOU on the future so that the debts of the past can be forgiven and what is dirty can be called clean.
But still I believe in heroes who are brave and strong for one day they will free us from the politicans who are not.

Yes. All soldiers deserve to be called heroes, even if they are retired. My grandfather fought in WWII. I definitely think they deserve to be called heroes, alongside police officers, fire fighters, and doctors. They give so much up to fight for us. Many of them have families and homes, and they give those up to defend our country.
God Bless America! ♥

Anyone who would risk there life to make yours better (like a soldier/sailor) is a hero in my book they give up there home life to go over and protect are freedoms yes sometimes the have to take a life but it is to protect others not just to kill. I my be bias because my husband served in the Navy for 13 years and was injured during his service and my son is right now in boot camp for the Army and they both were/ are willing to die so we here in the USA can have freedoms most countries don't have. Also yes police officers and fireman our hero's just like the military my husband is now a sheriffs deputy and protects us here at home.

I disagree with the war, but I support the soldiers who volunteer to fight these politicians' wars. They are heroes who fight for your country so that you are free to sit on the computer and say they don't deserve to be called heroes.
Work on your grammar, come back when you're older, maybe you'll understand.

Clayton hit the nail on the head.
I served, however when I served it was no big deal, what bothered me at the time was the number that enlisted(hid) in the reserves, or national guard, knowing that the risk of seeing combat was significantly reduced, and in some cases assured. Today that is not the same situation. The majority of us enlisted did our tour of duty and got on with our lives, some like myself reenlisted, no big deal.

well,
im not here to toot my own horn, however i am here to defend my fellow soldiers,
as a soldier here in afghanistan, you need to think for a second the sacrafices we make as people the things you enjoy on a day to day basis for example; water, hot food, electricity, basic entertainment, the freedom to visit your famillies to be with your kids or your spouse. alot of us cant enjoy these things. think about the people that are here, they are mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, so on.. and were here because we believe in helping our fellow man and our fellow american to be safe and free from tyrany free from extreamist and terrorist. think about what happened on september 11, 2001 these religious extreamist attacked and killed thousands of our brothers and sisters just because they believe that our women shouldnt have rights and we shouldnt have the freedom to practice our own religion and so on. were not here because were trigger happy blood thirsty addrenaline junky murderers, were here to fight terrorist to let them know that we will not stand for there coward attacks on our people and we wont stand for there tyrant behavior in there own country. just to let you know, what american soldiers are doing here are great things, were helping the people of afghanistan build there country and there millitary to fight off these extreamist groups that had them live in fear for years. the things us soldiers endure here is harder than anything you could ever imagine. have you ever walked up a ten thousand foot mountain with over 80 pounds of gear? what we do here as american soldiers should be respected by every man woman and child of america what we do and what we accomplish under great adversity should be respected by all, i serve with heroes of the united states everyday and its an honor to stand, fight and serve with them.

IMO some are, some aren't. Just like some doctors and some cops are, but also some aren't. Generalizing heroes by profession doesn't really work. If I were to pick 1 profession that was though I would say it would be firefighters though.

They join the Military - not just the Army - knowing that they may in the course of their duty take another human life. The vast majority don't want it to happen but sometimes it's inevitable.
They also know that in the course of their duty their lives may be at risk, yet they still join, on the whole because they have a sense of duty to their country. If this isn't a heroic act then what is?
A Doctor's life is very rarely - if ever - in danger so why should he be hailed a hero? Policemen and women, yes, Firefighters, yes but a doctor?
To me a Hero is someone who risks everything for the good of others.

Well this is a sensitive and contrivercial question. In my personal oppinion combat tested soldiers and anyone who volunteers for this dangerous job for the opportunity to serve the country and the people they love is and forever will be a hero without question. I am in the Army as an infantry and just because im one of them doesnt mean i think we are heros. usualy umong us the soldiers that stand out and do something coragious are heros. but individualy one may be a hero to a smale group such as family and friends none the less just as important. Nobody ever asks or claims to be a hero. and the definition of a hero is diferent from person to person. killing is one part of the job but becomming active in trying to change the world around you hasto be in some class of heroism.

I think they are heroes, because in all the jobs in the country they had picked the job that is very dangerous, and they know they can even be killed, but they are heroes because they fight for our country and for your safety. Sure they kill other soldiers but only if they cause harm to our country.

I've been thinking about this too.
For me it's more about the fact that I disagree entirely with the war. So from there, how can you 'support your troops' without supporting the war?
Well I think they do deserve a great deal of respect. What they do is very dangerous, and they are indeed fighting for their country. Even if the country is doing something terrible. Most soldiers have the right intentions, that is, fighting for their country, and helping the civilians of the countries we've invaded, and I believe intentions are the best thing to look at in this kind of question.
Of course, there are plenty who have the wrong intentions, and they don't deserve to be called heroes.
Where it gets more complicated is for example, the bombings of Baghdad. These were certain to result in far more civilian deaths than militant deaths, and someone had to pull the trigger. So can we say these soldiers are heroes, killing civilians because they're told to? We don't know what the intentions are here. But I think theres always a choice. And knowing the background of this war, I couldn't be the one to make that choice.
