18 year old female and the army?
I'm 18 years old and considering the army. My first choice was the air force but because of the school I graduated from they wouldn't let me go. My mom really wanted me to go into the air force too because it's safer and the army is a lot more life threatening. Being a female, is there anything I can tell her to ease her mind a little bit? And I've been doing a lot of research recently on the army, is it true females can't go into combat?
Additional Details
I read a news paper article online saying they weren't supposed to but in some of their jobs they did anyways but the article was back in 2005..that's why I'm asking about it now.

Well, first off, if u do decide for Army, find a good job. My advice is to start in the medical field; medical equipment tech, food inspector (my actual job), dentist, veterinary tech...to name a few. Women CAN go to combat; I went to Baghdad Iraq when I was Artillery and we had 3 girls in our company, they had to be there in order for us to search iraqi women. Another advice, get a good score in the ASVAB, do not rush it, it will give you a better chance to pick the job that you want. Do NOT pick truck driver (68M), it sucks and a lot of girls get stuck with that job. Another thing, forget about the recruiter, he aint the one getting you the deal, is actually the guy at MEPS the one you have to watch out for. He will offer you the suckiest jobs in exchange for a bonus, DO NOT fall for it. Remember you are giving X amount of years to the army, Money is not worth having a job that you will hate for X years you signed up for. Good Luck, have you taught of NAVY?

its true technically females cant go into combat but they shoot at all of us but it is possible to minimize your risks by going into a "fobbit" mos like the 15 series or 94 L R Y or some 25 series or a computer mos

They are still sent to Iraq and Afghanistan. They live and work on the same camps the men do. They go out on convoys, same as men do. They aren't exactly safe.

But they aren't allowed in Infantry or other combat arms specialties, so it's not their JOB to go kill enemy fighters. They serve in combat support and combat service support roles. So do a lot of men in the Army, though. Women in the Army are safer than some of the men, but that's about all you can say.

Yes it is true a women can not go to combat, but they can serve at and up to what is called the front lines.(A line in which reflects the meeting point of both in conflict met to fight). This is not considered combat, but cross the line ur in combat.
I agree with your mom, finish Hi School and go into the Air Force, they have more human resources class than the Army. Most of their classes is alto like college

The air force is not actually any safer. Depending on want to be, such as for an example a pilot, you will have to fly big and expensive planes, and even though technology is very advanced now, the computers can malfunction and you can crash into the mountains and die. If you are in air combat you can easily get bombed. It may seem safer but it is not.

You can do the nurse corps for the army :] I think you'll be pretty safe doing that...I'm an 18 y/o female too and that's what I'm gonna do. Plus, recruiters jump at nurses haha, they'll def want you in their rotc program :] but really its up to you. You can do different kinds of nursing for them...you can be an obgyn nurse, working in a hospital. And nurses in the army are like nurse practitioners here in the civilian world; so that's cool. Just give it a thought ^^ hope you find what works for you and hope your parents will come to support whatever decision you make...good luck :D

Technically, females are not allowed to hold a Combat MOS, (Infantry, Artillery, Armor and so on). However, there are times when a female can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. When you join the military, you have to remember that the job is war and there is no guarantee that you won't get killed if you are serving in a war zone. Terrorists can put IED's anywhere that is used by the military and if you happen to be in a vehicle that is hit by an IED, you're gonna have a very bad day.
Sorry if this doesn't help you win your mother over but I see so many questions just like this here and I really don't understand how some people think that they can join the military and not have to be put in any kind of danger. They want to join for the benefits like free education , but they're not willing to pay the price to get those benefits. Some people will actually say that they will join but if they are going to get deployed, they'll run away and hide. It doesn't make any sense to me. And what kind of school did you go to that the Air Force won't let you join? I've never heard of anything like that before.
