Why does my husband prefer to play computer games over family, his home responsibilities, etc?
I know they are addictive, but there is so much to do. I feel so embarrassed that these games are more interesting than the kids and me. He was so excited to move into our first house, but it's been 6 months now and he spends way more time on World or Warcraft than anything.

Over the past couple days he's been moping around the house. I asked why, he said he wanted to play his game.

Any suggestions?
Additional Details
He has a full time day job. He primarily plays with his two brothers...

I play games like crazy too, probably a little too much. My kids have gotten to the point that they love to play with me. My wife spends a lot of time in the same room wit hus chatting on the computer so everything works out well. We just got a Wii tooand it is fun for everyone. Try geting one of those and get the whole family to play together.

He has a job, right? if so he's probably stressed and not wanting to do anymore and unwind. If he's providing for you that is what guy's think their job is to provide and they are done. Maybe ask him POLITELY to do maybe a simple task, but not take on a royal mess you didn't feel like doin'. Ya gotta give him a break he's been workin' all day.

Be careful, World of Warcraft is really addictive. I play it myself. Also, theres a lot of skanking women who play the game too because they love attention from guys.

Consider playing it with him just to check up on him.

You already have the answer Wendy. Gaming IS addictive and beyond a point requires treatment like all other addictions. You can try roping in friends and family to find alternative outdoor activities for him and talk to him. Pretty severe cases require the services of a shrink. Don't panic. But yes he is not likely to give it up on his own without any help and support.

hey computer games can be addictive. now he as an adult and he has to learn that there is the real world too. and if he can't clearly chose whats reality and whats not then he needs some help. talk to him too. find out why he doesn't spend time with you guys anymore. if its all about his addiction they whats the difference with drugs and gaming. an addictions an addictions no question about it. sure hes passion about saving a village from a evil monster but he has a family to run too. hey get involve too. have him ask his warcraft friends online if he is the bad guy about this situation. I'm pretty sure they'll agree on this one. trust me on this one. i was really addictive on a similar online gaming called final fantasy11. i lost a lot from my addiction and don't let this happen to him. sure he can get a fix off of saving the world from evil minions.
remember the greatest journey and adventure is experiencing life itself. tell him what we do in life is what really counts! hey good luck and take care.

these games are competitive. even against yourself. u keep trying to do better, get a better score etc. maybe find something that he can compete against himself (or others) without the vid games. you might have to get creative to keep that within the family...something you can all do together or even the family watch and cheer him on at something. good luck, hope you find the right thing!

mizz. answers.
it gives him power, and place where kids arent whining, and he has no responsibilities. my mother used to have the same problem with my father. he sat there all day, hes a stay at home dad, playing some internet browser game. when we said hes "lame" for sitting there all day he got madder. but eventually he got bored of talking and working with the sometimes quite ignorant aggressive players on there. try pulling him away for a family outing to a movie and dinner.

The addictive nature springs from wanting to avoid or hide from something. The two of you need to seek counseling from a professional in order to root out the the cause of his problem and save your marriage.

Many of us are facing these kind of issues these days. its really very painful wen one of our family member just spends time on video games and watching TV and neglect us and not spend time on family and kids.. i would suggest you to be little patient ...

The best way is to make him realize that how bad U feel wen he does not share your work.. try to explain him with proper communication, if this does not work , just start ignoring him for some time and carry on with your own work, do not help him wen he needs your help the most.. this is not a good idea though but U have to do it ) this is the only way he can understand wat hes doing is not good.. after all family is about sharing work, fun and responsibilities..

Guys are in tune with video games. Guys are very visual and crave instant gratification. Video games provide this in abundance. Guys feel like they can conquer anything the game has to offer and it will only take a little more time. If you are hassling him belittling him, he will find an escape in the game and will tune out everything. Family, friends even hist trusted best friend. If you force him away from it, he will just
resent you and that changes the problem.

You are better off supporting his game playing by learning about and learning why it is important to him. Act interested and slowly get him to plan his game playing time. Work at setting aside some part of the evening or a few days a week when he is free to play. One thing guys love to do is show how much they know or how good they are.
