Crazy
Do you think that the Catholic church should allow it's Priests to marry?
How can a Catholic Priest give advice to someone that is having marriage problems, if they have no experience of marriage themselves?

Absolutely yes.
They would then have a better understanding of marriage, and what it entails.
And, as someone said earlier, it would stop them, hopefully, from playing with little boys.

Gee, that's a difficult one.

that is true, but the only reason they can apparently give advice is because of their holyness and following suit of jesus christ... they're supposed to be the closest we can get in catholicism to a straight answer... if you make them more 'imperfect' it kinda... takes that away

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!....I am catholic and Ive always thought it strange for a normal human man to go without sex...its not normal for them to have to do this....it goes back ..way back in history when all this started....but if they did allow the priests to marry alot of their problems would go away...

Yes. The practice today has its roots in a different time and place. There is nothing in the Bible that requires priests to be celibate. It is a church practice that desperately needs to change.

I totally agree and then maybe they wouldn't have the other sexual problems that they do encounter quite frequently. I also think it would set a good example for people who are confused on sexual issues today. I'm not closed minded, I just think it would help. You might not have to be a puppy to give advice on housebreaking but, it sure would help if you at least had one!

"One does not have to have the disease to treat it" so to speak, so a priest with training in family counseling might just be fine. But the church forbade marriage of priests for other reasons -- namly inheritance laws of the early Middle Ages. If the priests had no children, the death of one allowed the Church to continue to own the property. In this way the Catholic Church has become the wealthiest organization in the world, wealthier than many countries. There is now no longer any reason to prevent marriages to be a priest -- those inheritance laws don't now exist, but it is now tradition.......and ministers and priests are paid a salary. I also means that many gay men become priests (always was that way, however)....Answer your question????????

i think they should be allow to marry, then they wouldn't be taking their urges out on young boys. you do have a point, how can they counsel people on marriage issues without going through it themselves.

I'm Roman Catholic. I don't think you have to be married to give advice about marriage (anymore than you have to be a puppy to give instructions on housebreaking).

I do think though that priest should be allowed to marry simply because the Church in America can't get new priest.

Sooner or later The Church is going to have to give in.

I strongly believe in that. The catholic church is more into dogma than addressing a current problem. Your example of marriage is appropriate and I support your point of view. Not only marriage problem, they would face the truth about raising unruly teens. Serving God should not be restrained for a group living in celibacy, serving God is an attitude, a decision, a calling.

Yes, they see a completely different and distortioned (sorry for the spelling) prespective from a normal person.... I think sexuality is a very important part of the human nature, not something sinful and impure as many people want to think... I'm a Catholic, by the way.

And stop thinking all priests or most of them are child molesters, there are very good priests that deserve respect for what they've done... child molesters shouldn't be called even christians in the first place, they're nothing but the human race dreg.

the church lets deacons marry so I don't see the big deal. all the church cares about is it's money and property so if they were protected with iron clad pre nups they shouldn't care.

Yes I do. They're not going by what the bible says about a man leaving his parents and marrying, the CC is going by their own traditions about this. You're very right about someone who has never been married giving out maritial advice. Experiences is life's best teacher.

u know me and my cousin (who's catholic) were talking about this topic. and we feel that priests should be allowed 2 marry the nuns. i mean i think that makes the most sense. but i dont think they should be able 2 marry anyone thats not a nun...

There is quite a good argument to say that someone who is unmarried may be better qualified, if properly instructed, to give advice on marriage problems than one who may, inevitably, colour his advice with his own particular experience.

The problem I see with insisting that priests be celibate is that it may tend to favour those men who are pre-disposed to celibacy. The theory is that a priest should be 'married' to his calling (or 'to the Church', if you prefer) and that a married priest would inevitably have a conflict of interests. I have never seen the validity of that argument, since it doesn't seem to be a problem with priests of other Christian denominations or with Rabbis (I don't know if Imams are allowed to marry or not).

Since I am not a Catholic, I don't feel that it is for me to say whether the Church should allow priests to marry or not.

I do believe in upholding traditions where to dispense with them runs the risk of pandering to popular taste and I don't see that the Pope's advisors are merely holding to tradition for the sake of it. I believe there is likely to be good and rational thinking behind their decisions that takes current feeling in the world into account.

well, if the church can let them be paedophiles, I dont see the problem in letting them get married.... except of course that when they die, their estate would go to their spouse and not the church.... And yes, I appreciate that not all Catholic Priests are paedophles, and a lot of them do a good job, but come on! You dont really hear about C Of E priests abusing little kids do you?

Yes, absolutely. To deny them a part of life that's entrenched in our dna is just stupid. And you're right about the advice thing - the only people that should be allowed to give marital advice are ones with a track record of success.

the reason they dont allow their priests to marry is because if they married either the family or the congregation would suffer because the couldnt focus all of their attention on either one and they would not be given the proper attention so No

I am a roman catholic and it makes me sick that people dont realize that most priests aren't that way it just gets more attention because they are a spiritual advisor so you really shouldn't talk about what you dont understand

YES, Priests SHOULD be allowed to marry. Why should they grow old alone?? Everyone has a right to feel/be loved, to have someone to confide in, our "other" half, to cuddle with, to hold, to hug, to kiss, to feel the warmth of the body of the person he loves!! And, to have a sexual relationship with as well, after all, a priest IS human too!! He has sexual feelings just like the rest of us do.
