In the UK there are two types of lawyers, called barristers and solicitors. Barristers mainly argue cases in courts, while solicitors do more drafting of contracts and giving advice. Barristers are more specialised, and also give formal written advice (known as an opinion) on their specialist areas. For both you need a three year law degree with at least 2.2 (possibly 2.1) honours, or an honours degree in another subject with a one year postgraduate conversion course. You then need a 1 year course specific to the type of lawyers you want to be, called the LPC for Solicitors and the BVC for Barristers. You then do a years pupillage if you want to be a barrister, which is spent shadowing another barrister for the first half, and in supervised practice in the second half. Solicitors have a two year training contract with a solicitors firm. After that they can practice as solicitors. If you need more information try the jobs4u website (just google the name).

You can become a Lawyer by doing a GDL, LPC etc or you could study via ILEX, which I am currently doing. Studying by ILEX means you can earn whilst you learn. At the end of a set period, and with the working experience you will be well on your way.

Try this website.

My best friend is a real estate and corporate law lawyer. Her job is mainly paperwork. Another friend works for a life insurance company, and in addition to paperwork, she negotiates settlements, and approves estate transfers.

The pay is good, $80,000+, you have to have a 3 or 4 year Batchelor of Arts degree from University, be in the top 10% of your class and pass the LSAT in the 90th percentile range in order to get into law school, which lasts 2 or 3 years. Then you article with a law firm, while you study to write your bar exams. It takes 6-8 years and is not cheap.
