I don't think you people understand...i have watched these children every day for almost a year now...someone told me since they live with me on occasion, i watch them, and pay for them, ect...that i am able to claim them and i am wondering if anyone knows if thats true?

If no one else is claiming the children, it's fine. A dependant does not have to be your child...biologically or otherwise. As long as you support them, go ahead and claim them.

Yes it is illegal. It is tax fraud. While it is possible you could go to jail, but more likely you will have to pay the improperly deducted taxes with interest and some very nasty penalties.

If either or both of the parents claimed them on their tax returns, you are committing fraud. The IRS will see you as being a "really nice person" for "donating" your time and resources. They will still go after you though. Only parents or legal guardians can claim the kids on taxes.
