Mr X
Why not moderation in the banning of smoking - give the choice to the landlord - smoking or not smoking?
Before you answer - read the question and answer it - I don't want to hear about your hatred of smokers - or how good you think the ban is etc - leave your vociferous hatreds behind and answer the question.

We are all adults and people who choose to work in pubs know what they are taking on - if they don't like it why work there? I don't see the logic.

i dnt hav a hatred of smokers as you call, especially considering my sister smokes. but ppl should hav the choice of wether they want to be exposed to 2nd hand smoke. i mean at this very moment im getting second hand smoke which is rlly bad considering i hav asthma, nd i can barely breath period. 2nd hand smoke can kill.

well if you gave the landlord the choice in most situations they would choose smoking due to the fact that it would be more profitable. This is not what the government wants, they want no smoking anywhere. The government don't give the landlords a choice so they get their way.
I personally have no problem with smokers and feel that it should be the landlords choice.

totally agrre. i am a non-smoker but when in Spain recently i noticed that all bars, restaurants and cafes had notices in their windows and in prominent places inside stating whther they allowed smoking or not. As i see it that gives everyone a choice of what to do . I can go into a non-smoking establishement if i want to, you are never more than a few yards away from one. I think it is called democracy - freedom of choice- something like that. hard to remeber what that is in the UK.

Staff could also have a choice which one they worked in too, smokers would probably choose to work in the smoking pub.

I live in the US, so my take should be a bit different. I live in New Jersey, near the border to Pennsylvania. I was a bartender and waiter when my fine state decided to ban smoking "for the safety of the employees". Bulls*it. It had nothing to do with the employees since over 3/4 of the restaurant workers in this state are considered "heavy" smokers.

I lost half of my business and income. For every 2 good regular smoking customers, 1 fastidious and annoying (and badly tipping) non-smoking customer would come in cheerfully bleating "Isn't it soooo nice you can breathe in here now?"

No, it isn't. I lost good customers because of idiots like you and your cheap *** isn't going to cut it. Since then, I've left the business I loved (and was quite good at) because I wasn't making the money anymore. But, boy, am I so much safer in this warehouse with the forklifts and rodents.

Government should not be in the business of promoting "good", only preventing "bad". Don't worry non-smokers, it'll be your bad habit that's attacked next. Don't ***** to me.

Difficult one this.Assuming the arguments for a ban are still valid the landlord of a pub would have to decide whether his own views were paramount or should he have a poll amongst his customers and go by the majority. He is going to upset somebody as it is unlikely that he would get a unaninmous response.Assuming he agreed to allow smoking he would probably lose some of his custom, but that possibly be balanced by cutomers fron non smoking pubs transferring their custom to him.If on the other hand he banned smoking he again would be in a lose and gain situation. He must also consider his staff.Do they want to continue to work in a smoky atmosphere or can he swap staff between other pubsaccording to the workers wishes. It seems reasonable for this sort of choice to be available to suit both publican and customers except fot one thing. The agenda behind it all.The Health authorities deprecate smoking, quoting the millions of pounds spent each year on smoking related illnesses the money for which they argue could be much better used elsewhere in the health budget. The authorities and the government probably intend over the next few yeards to further restrict smoking with the eventual object of banning it altogether and not allowing tobacco products to be sold or imported. The big tobacco companies are busy diversifying their businesses to minimise the amount tobacco plays in their turnover and profits. They will continue to trade heavily in tobacco in other parts of the world.

Mr Sceptic
Because the ban isn't about the landlord making a choice for his customers. It's about providing a smoke free workplace for his employees.

This legislation has nothing to do with the 'rights' of the customers, and everything to do with the 'rights' of the employees.

EDIT: I know Health and Safety legislation gets a bad press, but 'the pub workers can choose not to work there' argument could be extended to allow building sites to not put up safety rails or dangerous machines to be left unguarded with the get out that "the workers know the risks and can choose not to work there".

I'm not necessarily arguing against you, but you can see how allowing one group of workers to work in potentially unsafe conditions could spread.

Freedom of Choice is the issue here it is important that we give those who do not smoke a choice as well as those who do......We should be able to decide for ourselves if we want to smoke or not, as for the augment that staff are affected, they do not have to work in those places where smoking takes place just as a nun does not have to work in a brothel
