it is not allowed. unlawful search... this is a minor being depraved of privacy without parental consent. PTA and school board would love to hear about this...

The courts have ruled repeatedly that rights granted under the constitution do not apply to schools.
the may:
Ban clothing they determine to be offensive in breach of freedom of expression laws.
Search a student or locker without a warrant in breach of privacy laws
May suspend a student for posting derogatory statements about others on a website, even if done outside of school

most probably yes, a police officier cannot read your text messages without either consent or some sort of warrant.

I don't think it is allowed unless there is reason to believe there is content on the phone that is considered illegal or not tolerated at school.

But they legally aren't allowed to do so at all unless they contact the parent first or let the child know they're going to do it.
