Can I file an anonymous complaint on my neighbor?
My neighbor is very rude and despite my best efforts to solve the problems he causes by being so rude and obnoxious I cannot do it without assistance anymore. I would like to call the police and file a noise complaint on him as he leaves his dog out for hours and one member of my household works third shift and therefore sleeps during the day when this rude person leaves their dog outside barking contantly keeping them up and ruining their sleep. I see no reason they need to know that it is me who is filing the complaint as there are other neighbors nearby who could also file it and would rather they just didn't know (because he's the type who would treat the neighbor who called it in even worse and with me it would get very ugly...). I simply want the police to show up, tell him they've had an anonymous complaint that his dog is barking for hours on end while he is indeed home and does nothing to stop it. He's far too rude for anything else but the police to have an effect on him. Our police are in a quite small region so they would indeed come out for this kind of complaint.

Can I do this or does one HAVE to provide their own information regarding the complaint? Surely if I am annoyed by it my other nearby neighbors must be (perhaps not quite so directly affected though)...so he wouldn't know who called it in since he is surrounded by neighbors.

Yes. But the police aren't the ones you need to call. You need to all Animal control. Start calling them, and racking up multiple complaints. Eventually, they'll start fining them.

Neither the police or animal control will give your name out as a matter of policy . i don`t know what they can do because there are usually hours set for when dogs would not be allowed to bark outside , and these hours are usually in the evenings and overnight ...............

They might be able to do something if you can prove the barking is excessive ............

if you have the guts to call the cops , than have the guts to give your name & take a stand ! the police won't give your name out anyhow

regardless of how rude your neighbor is, the fact is the world can not bend to your husbands sleep schedule. your neighbor is allowed to have his dog out during the day, barking or not.

laws ARE different in different places, so maybe talk to the police and find out the verbage on the ordinance. maybe your situation does fit. good luck.

You likely need to call animal control, not the police. However, I guarantee you that your neighbor will know who called. They always do.

You call your city Animal Control people, not the police. They MAY withhold your name, although they are not legally obligated to do so. They will not act on an anonymous complaint.

In any event, if you've already butted heads with this neighbor, he'll assume it is you anyway.

You can send an unsigned letter to anyone you want, including your local police department. Whether that department is likely to act on such a letter depends on the department. Andy of Mayberry would probably respond. The NYPD is less likely to do so.
