Yes it is an offence to display a registration plate on a vehilce which does not conform to the regulations such as size, spacing and font. The Police can issue you with an on the spot fine, request that the plate is changed within 14 days and if noy report you to court. If it is a personalised plate then DVLA can revoke your right to use it.
Companies who make the registation plate up for you should be registered now and require proof of ownership of the registration number.

Yes. It will not conform to the regulations set.
My own personal view is that if the licence plate is clearly readable nad it is obvious what it really is then I personally don't have a problem with it. If however it is unreadable and doesn't bear a resemblence to what it should be then it needs changing.
Obviously traffic officers will have other ideas.

In Illinois, it is illegal to modify your registration plates, but hey you can apply for personalized ones.

Although you might see loads of vehicles displaying 'doctored' number plates. It is illegal to change them to read a name or to change the style of the lettering and numbers , as this can make them virtually unreadable.

Yes, there are clearly defined regulations as to the spacing of letters/numbers and the placing of studs etc. If you purchase a number plate and misrepresent the letters/numbers you run the risk of it being cancelled by the DVLA without compensation.

By altering your reg plate so letters are too close together or the bolts are misplaced in order to cover up certain letters e.t.c. means your car will fall foul of the construction and use regulations, you'll probably get a fine although in extreme circumstances the police or highways agency can slap a prohibition notice on you and tow your car, or make you change it within a certain number of days or face court.

Yes it is illegal to change plates,
because you have to register your plates first with dvla
or you will have a big fine if you go ahead with doing this,
if you do what I think you are thinking of doing
better get saving.

You can obtain an application for Vanity/Personalized license plates. After your request has been checked, and approved, you will receive a notice that the plate is available, and how much the fee will be. You will then have a set amount of time to respond. If you do not send in the fee, the application will be terminated.
