No one can go to jail for just being racist, but they can and will if they act on their thoughts/and feelings by harming or harrassing someone because of their race. That's called a hate crime.

No, you have freedom of speech in America. Its just not politically correct. As long as they don't do anything about it (ie, killing people) then they are fine. In fact, the Ku Klux Klan is a legal organization. However, some of the activities they do are illegal. I for one, would ban organizations such as these but this would violate the Constitution.

You can talk to whoever until you're purple in the face it won't make a difference. In some parts of the country, even though it's illegal by federal standards, law enforcement would find reason for traffic stops or anything else they could find for couples like that. Just to make life miserable. Expecting for you to yell racist to give them reason for an arrest. Like, disorderly conduct or something of that nature. And, when judges see people like that in their court room, it even looks worse. If it's ulterior motive or what, yes police have large amounts of power. It doesn't look good, and normally like throughout history even today people like that lose out everytime.
