Criminally, no she can't get into any trouble as she was just acting in self defense.
As far as the lawsuit goes, there have been cases of people doing things they shouldn't be doing on other people's property, and when the stupid moron got hurt, he sued the property owner. I know, it's absolutely ******* ridiculous.
Since shes a female with two kids she has a better chance of not having to pay anything, but there are a lot of factors involved.

depends on the laws of the state. in texas, she could have shot him dead and not faced any criminal charges.
since he's suing her, and not pursuing a criminal charge, she won't serve jail time or anything like that, but depending on the ruling may be held accountable for medical expenses, etc. Remember she has the right to request a jury even in a civil hearing, and they may be easier to sway based on the home defense line than trying to get a judge to bite on legal precedence.

Total self-defense. He was the idiot who broke into her house in the first place! She can sue him for breaking and entering!

Wow, she sounds like my kind of gal. Good for her. I doubt she would get in trouble unless she lives in New York or California.

Absolutely nothing should happen to her. I would do the exact same thing, she did exactly the right thing! He broke into her house, it doesn't matter if he begged her to do nothing. Knocking someone out isn't against the law, but I'm pretty sure breaking into someones house will get a good amount of time behind bars.
She won't be in trouble at all.

I don't anything about the judicial system but I'm assuming she won't because its her house and shes trying to defend it from someone who purposely broke into her home.

well i think that would be her word against his but i would say no.
she could plea it was self defense but he could say that once he was on the ground and gave up, he no longer posed a threat she had to stop hitting him
but he broke into HER house and put her in danger so i would say her case is looking better than his
