Why do people try to rob stores?

Here in Houston there have been about 8 cases where a robber went up to a store with his gun drawn and announced that he was wearing a bullet proof vest. Each time the owner just shot the robber in the head. It seems like that would deter other ones. The sheriff here said it was an industrial accident, their occupation was robbery and one of the hazards is getting shot. It just seems like announcing you have a bullet proof vest is telling the owner exactly where to shoot.

I don't live anywhere near Texas, but in most parts of the world your average shopkeeper simply isn't armed. In any case, one would think that any robber with half a brain cell would have his gun trained on the store keeper at all times, and wouldn't announce that he was wearing a bullet proof vest. Apparently, not everyone is that smart.

Hmm that's weird. I live houston and haven't read about any of those robberies or the sheriff saying that.
