Paintball guns and BB guns do not fall under the legal definition of "firearms". In my state (NC), mere possession of either by a convicted felon does not violate that law. Now, if you were using either of them to commit a crime you might be in trouble. Good luck.

you could put marbles or metal balls in paint ball guns and that could probably kill someone.

Then you were told a lie you can buy a paintball gun and a BB gun without a background check I never heard of a background check on a paintball/bb gun perchase. I bought bb gun that looks like a real one and the only check they did is an id check to see if im 18

It really depends on what your state considers a firearm.
My state says ANY article that has a projectile that is propelled by expanding gas OR explosion, is a firearm.
For you, that would include paint ball guns (c02 is an expanding gas)
As far as spring loaded BB guns, Our city code calls them a firearm but not the state statute. BB guns that are pump or break barrel (shot with compressed air) are still considered firearms as the air we breath can be compressed and would make it a compressed gas.
I know that sucks, but check your state and local laws on pellet, BB, spring action and pump.
You should be able to find it fairly easily.
