Why aren't people punished for roasting their children to death?
Every summer, you read about it. Some self-absorbed idiot leaves their small child locked in a hot car only to come back and find them dead. As if that weren't outrageous enough, half of the time no charges are pressed because the parents are deemed to have "suffered enough" for their lapse in judgement. When charges are pressed, it almost always amounts to a slap on the wrist in the form of involuntary manslaughter and/or criminal negligence. This makes me furious! If, instead of driving her kids into a lake, Susan Smith had decided to "forget" about her sons while she spent an afternoon shopping at WalMart, she'd be a free woman today.

Don't bother pointing out to me the incomparable agony of losing a child and how it's worse than any jail time a person could face. Doesn't this kind of sympathetic mentality create a "perfect crime" for those who just want to get rid of their kids? Part of the purpose of punishing crime is to serve as a warning and deterrent to others who would commit the same act. Have we become so PC as a country that we're not collectively enraged when a child is literally baked alive?

That's because the parents don't do it intentionally. They often forget the children are in the back seat of their cars because they either are asleep or otherwise being quiet. Yes, it is a horrible thing to do but the reason the parents aren't being punished is because the officials know they are already being punished for the guilt they are feeling right now and what they will be feeling for the rest of their lives.

I find your question very sad. Sad because you are so judgemental without compassion, are so outraged without understanding and so angry without sadness.

If only we would stop judging others and look to ourselves to try and make this more a more safe place for our children. Anger will not do it, judgement will not do it and outrage will certainly not do it.

"God doesn't look at how much we do, but with how much love we do it".

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them"

Remember that song "What the world needs now, is love, sweet love".

If we want situations like this to change, then we must educate parents, who have no idea the harm they are doing. I had six children, and would never leave them in the car on their own. I have a dog and I would not leave HIM in the car on his own. But I seem to know better, those who choose to do otherwise, do not know any better. Nobody told them, nobody educated them. If we started this type of education in the schools, then at least, when this did happen, we COULD lay blame because they had been taught differently.

Your statement "a perfect crime for those who just want to get rid of their kids" - is so not necessary. Maybe one, amongst many, would intentionally murder their child in this way, but 99% of the time, that is not what is happening. It is ignorance and thoutht-less- ness.

Would like to live with the fact that you killed your child in this manner, for the rest of your life. It would be a nightmare.

Anger is not what is needed here, compassion and education IS needed.

They are punished. Not with prison sentences or anything, but they have had their other children put in foster homes, been made to take regular parenting classes and have continual CPS visits.

Quite frankly, I don't think that, if you were too involved with yourself to leave your kid in the car to begin with, that you could really have cared THAT much about the kid in the first place. I try not to think too hardly on this subject because, already, I'm getting ready to puke.

In Texas it is illegal to leave a child unattended inside of a car especially during extreme heat! It is also illegal to leave a pet inside of a car during extreme heat! How in the hell can a person be so self absorbed and unaware that they have their kids in the car with them? Makes me want to puke!

Some are punished through the court system. Some get away with it. Either way, I imagine the suffering of losing a child(especially at your own hands) is a death sentence in itself. I am not sure I could recover from something like that.

Why prosecute? What more can they state possibly do to them? What purpose will jail serve for a tragic accident. Now if you have proof that the parent intended to harm their child then I say prosecute away. However, lacking proof of a crime and intent, no charges should be filed. You speak well and tug at the heart strings of people but, sometimes an accident is just an accident even if it has tragic consequences.

I have to agree with you, there is no excuse for harming children. There should be no difference when it is found that a parent decides to dispose of their children by taking their lives whether it be by drowning, strangulation, baked to death in a hot car or any other method.

I completely agree.

I remember a news story about a father locking his two children in a car and going hiking with a friend.

The one child was a toddler and the other an infant.

When the toddler was found, it had ripped handfuls of its hair out.

It was absolutely horrible.

No offense, but your info is wrong. Most parents ARE convicted and therefore held accountable for such stupidity. Why they would leave their kids in the car anyway is beyond me.If you weren't planning on taking them into the store, why did you bring them?Couldn't the have found a sitter instead?

I understand your anger and outrage. For these people there is no sympathy or understanding. If you need education to understand that leaving your child in a car for an extended length of time (in the heat or not) is wrong well really you should NOT be responsible for a child. And for those people who say they forgot, it shouldn't matter that it happened in a car. If you forget your child is in a pool, or outside and leave them there until they die you would be severely punished. Accident or not it does not make it right. The only way for us to solve this issue is with severe punishment. It doesn't matter how bad you feel after-wards as many different criminals of many different crimes have felt horrible after the crime(s) were committed. Does this mean that they should not be punished? No. The hell they live through after is created of their own faults and should not have anything do with our justice system. I believe that we should all take a stand and shout that parental accidents are not excusable because they are sorry because the next thing you know everyone who ever committed a crime should just be able to express true sorrow over their crime and get away with it. It is a sad thing to accidently harm your child but every parent and caregiver should know that ultimatly they are responsible for what happens to that child - no excuses! Children are precious and letting the wealthier ( poorer parents are ten times more likely to be convicted) just use oopsy as an excuse is well inexcusable.
