I believe following too close would cost more because that's a moving violation that will cost you some points on your license while a broken tail light is just a vehicle malfunction and no points are involved. In the long run, points on your license will cause your insurance to go up when it's time for renewal because they insurance company may check on your license to see if there is any cause for a premium increase.
I can tell you that following too close is about $85 and broken tail light is probably about the same b/c I don't know any ticket lower than that unless it's parking which is about $40.
depends on what jurisdiction you get the ticket from...fines can vary from agency to agency depending on state laws...in my jurisdiction the fines are the same, or within a few dollars of each other...around $237.50
fix the tail light and go to court and fight. the court has bigger fish to fry.most time they will throw it out. but make sure you ask for a trial and look serious. they want your money, and not you.
