Should I file some kind of report to the police for this?

My car and my mom's car are always parked in front of our home. A few days ago, I found a very distinctive scratch pattern that covers about a 4inx6in area of my car (It' a claw-like pattern). A couple days later, that same pattern appears on the passenger door of my moms car. And then a few days later on the drivers door of her car. Today I found that same pattern on the trunk of my car.
This is really frustrating since this will affect the resell value of the car, and I just don't have the money to fix that. Should I file some kind of report to the police?
We don't live in an awful neighborhood. It's decent, but kids often hang out and use basketball hoop that belongs to our neighbor.

This is not damage caused by a ball. This is damaged purposely caused by an object of some sort.

in my opinion it should be reported so they can make routines there once in a while just in case someone is damaging your vehicles.

Its not a police matter. If kids have damaged the car by playing basketball either move your car or ask them to move the hoop.

Unless you have insurance that covers that type of damage, or if you are fairly certain who is causing the damage, filing a report with the police is really pointless.

Absolutely file a report. It could be that other people in the neighborhood are being targeted, or it could just be you specifically. Maybe your report will prompt the police to step up patrols, especially if others have also reported it. Either way, if the culprit is ever caught, you've at least created a paper trail by reporting it, which could help you in compensation for the damage to your vehicle.
Not only that, but if it's just you that's being targeted, scratches on a car could just be the start of the vandalism. The vandals could get bolder...
