Out of state speeding ticket help?
I live in New Jersey and I recently went to Washington state on vacation. Rented a van and got a speeding ticket at night where it was already dark in some somewhat hickass town where there were only a few people out. I did 57 in a 40 and the cop was being a douche even when he knew I wasn't from around there and it was dark. On the ticket he spelled my city wrong and everything else is correct.
1. Do I get any points since it's out of state?
2. Is there a way to appeal/have a hearing without being there since I don't live there?
3. Does that misspelling do anything as far as getting away with it?
4. What happens if I refuse to pay the ticket?

My personal experience is that I received two out-of-state speeding tickets at two different times. The first one was in Arizona when I lived in California. I went to traffic school to avoid the points because the points would have gone on my CA license. The second one was in Texas at 2 AM and after the officer gave me a ticket, he escorted us to a small courthouse in a nearby town and "Got the judge out of bed." The judge gave us a "break" and lowered the price of the ticket to the only money we had with us and the points never went on my FL license. I think the "judge" and officer split the $250 we paid. I don't know about the misspelling on yours making any difference because they have the rest of your info, including your driver's license number. I know someone who refused to pay their ticket for $80.00. By the time the fees were added for non-payment, they had to pay almost $300.00 or a warrent would be put out on them and they would lose their license, but that was in the same state where they lived. I would contact the court in Washington and see if you can do online traffic school to keep points from being put on your license, but of course that means you have to pay the ticket or at least plead "no contest." It used to be much easier and more successful to fight tickets than it is now. A close relative recently got a ticket in a strange city at 3 AM for making an illegal left turn when she feared for her safety in a bad neighborhood she had never been in before and was lost. The officer didn't care that the sign had been graffitied over and was difficult to see. By the time she went back in the daytime to take pictures to fight the ticket, the sign had been cleaned. There are books in libraries and bookstores with suggestions of how to fight tickets. If you decide to fight, be prepared for it to take months if not years. Good luck.

1. Washington and New Jersey are both Compact States, meaning that points issued in one WILL affect your license in another.
2. The best way to know what your options are is to contact the court to which the citation was issued. You can explain to them you are from out of state, and they can give you your options.
3. In most areas anymore, a simple misspelling on a ticket is not enough for you to get off on, especially if you acknowledged and accepted the ticket.
4. If you don't pay it, the court will most likely issue a warrant for failing to address the ticket. Penalties vary depending on jurisdiction, but some places can and will suspend your license for warrants.
