All 50! If you do not have proof of who you are you will be taken in! To me if the police can and will detain you until they can prove who you are that means that you are required to carry I.D.!

There is no law that says you must carry an ID, however in a recent case the court ruled that it is constitutional for the police detain you until you produce proof of your identity if they have reason to believe you might be connected with a crime, About half of the states have laws that permit this.

While a number of states, including my own, require you to ID yourself to an officer none require you to carry ID to do so.
Now your school may require you to carry ID while on their property but the state does not require a ID, no matter what the campus police officer said, he just misinterpreted the ID law. Identifying yourself and carrying ID are two different things.
If an officer has reasonable suspicion that you are lying and can articulate that suspicion you can be detained while the officer attempts to verify your id.

If you can't identify yourself when asked by an officer, you may be taken to jail until your identity is established. Otherwise, criminals and those with warrants could just walk the streets without fear of arrest if they just carried no ID. There is no law that says you must carry ID.

Lets just say this. If you do not have I.D. when a cop asks for it they can take you to jail just to find out who you are and make sure you are who you say you are!
