Does being a retired Army soldier give you a better chance of being a Police Officer?

So lets say after i've done 8 years of Military. Will I have a better shot at being a police officer than the ordinary person? I'll be 27 years old and will have the knowledge of enforcement duties.

One one side you will have the maturity that the police might be looking for put on the other hand you have eight years to get in trouble and be rejected because of something that happened while you were in the service.
