Criminal Charge? In a accident where no one got hot but myself...?

A car jump in my lane without any warning/signal where i mashed the brakes and end up on top an "island" basically in the middle of the road, now my front bumper is all gone. The cops say from witness because I was speed (20 km over speed limit) I was a "dangerous driver" wtf? so they put me on criminal charges for reckless driving EVEN though I prevented a car accident. the only damages was my car. Is that even possible?

Hello Nino. Unfortunately, this would fall under "loss of physical control" and borders on reckless operation of a motor vehicle and yes, this is a citation, but not a criminal charge. The logic used is that although you avoided a more serious accident, if you hadn't been speeding, you would have been able to control your vehicle and bring it to a safe stop without wrecking your car. Whether you get a citation in the mail is up to the officer at the scene or his supervisor. One other factor which varies by jurisdiction is whether you did any damage to the island that ripped your bumper off. In Ohio, where I live and work, you would also be charged (financially) for the repair/replacement of any public property you damage when involved in an accident.
