Caught using Fake ID... How will a criminal record for fraud affect my career?
Today I got caught by the police using a fake ID to buy alcohol. I'm one month under 18. They came round to my house and told my parents that I'm likely to be prosecuted for fraud (they're clamping down on fake IDs round here), which will stay on my record forever. Will it be much harder to get into university and employment with this?

They're meeting me and my rents next week to tell us what's going to happen to me. I'm literally bricking it.

what you need to worry about before that is if your getting a massive fine of thousands of pounds or young offenders inst for 6 months. or both.
worry about that first.

Then the exciting part, yes you have just ruined your career life. by 1 month away from being legal aswell but i bet you have used this i.d for months if not longer.

Right first of all, i dont no if unis will stop you from enrolling but i do no most if not all major companies will not hire someone with fraud on there record, and yes theres no point no putting it on the application form when it asks as they do check, and its worse them finding out later than knowing straight away.

After this, you will NEVER EVER be able to travel to america, thailand, these two are the main areas of the world that will not let you in, i do beleive astrailia will not either, and its because you are basically classed as a criminal in there eyes and will refuse you.

I do hope you dont get into trouble and the officer investigating doesnt get you into trouble as they may take into consideration you havent been in trouble before, but dont count on it.
If i was the officer i would make you sweat for a week aswell and then tell you nothing is happening further.

My favourite line is;

Think before you act.

If they actually do prosecute, then in no uncertain terms, your future looks bleek. The thing is you can go to uni and college. However no decent employer will be interested now. Specially when you've got a mark on your record for fraud, I mean of all crimes it looks the worst on a record doesnt it?

Im pleased that the police are going ahead with prosecution because the amount of kids I see around town off their heads not being able to deal with the amount of alcohol in their system. This is the best way I think, you're being taught a lesson, and being used as an example to prove to other under age drinkers that this is serious.

Now you better pray to god that it doesnt go ahead, and think twice next time, and tell all your mates what nearly happened to you.

Take care.

I am in exactly the same boat mate, got caught with one at a bar in my local town, i am hoping that the doorman hasnt said anything to the police as i may well be done for fraud. You may well get a criminal record but i doubt it will affect your career that much all you have is a small mistake in childhood, everyone makes mistakes. I am 16 and am bricking it that i may be caught and done for it.

You're literally bricking it. That is the idea. You'll have got the message. Purpose served, you aren't going to forget it.

Very probably there'll be nothing more come of it other than a substantial b*llocking, but it's always possible.

I have to start this off by saying I'm not a lawyer.

In my opinion they are just trying to scare you straight. Sounds like you've never been in trouble with the police before, so you are going to be fine. They might make you go to an alcohol awareness program or something, but the chances of you being charged and convicted are nil.

In a worst-case scenario, if you are ever charged and convicted of a criminal offence as an adult, criminal records can be erased if you wait long enough, stay out of trouble, and do all the paperwork. You can only be asked about having a criminal record in certain instances. If you are charged but not convicted, you never have to say so (except in very special circumstances like if you were applying to be a police officer). Something like ten per cent of Canadians have criminal records and something like 20 per cent of Canadians have been charged with a criminal offence. Relax, this is going to be ok.

Use alcohol responsibly, young man.

I'd be very surprised if they do anything bar give you a warning.I doubt that it's in anyone's interest to take it to court. It'd be a waste of taxpayers money. If you were getting charged then it would have happened staright away,i'd have thought.
You've only got 30/31 days til you can walk into a pub and get served legally so try and relax a bit.
Accept the warning, nod your head in the right places and move on....
