can i drive to work with a permit?

i live in california and there has to be some kind of work permit form i can get from the DMV to go to work and school with a permit. there is insurance on my car but it's under my dad's name cause i don't have a license yet. am i also covered? my name isn't under the policy though.

please some reasonable answers, this is serious to me.
