Today I was in a car accident and was wondering what to do?

I rear ended a car today in wet conditions. We did not call the police, we only switched infomation. They later called the police after getting a 600 dollar estimate and were told that the other driver needed to call because it was under 1000 dollars. What should I do?

Most police agencies will require you to make a report if the damage is over a certain amount. It sounds like in this case it is $1000 - the police will still do a report if it is under the established amount if that is what the people involved want. I would guess you are not required to make a report, but the other party is wanting to. I am a Police Dispatcher and have been for 4 years. We always ask that both parties be present for the report to be made, but if one party refuses to, we will still do the report for the party wanting it, and then the officer will attempt to contact the other party to finish the report and get their information. I would call the police to get a report made, because it will make it easier for everyone.

Usually the low limit for reporting to the police is $750 to $1000 in damage, depending on the state. Just call your agent or claims department and report the accident; let them handle it. It may increase your premium for a few years, but it's easy for a small claim to get out of hand if you try to handle it yourself.

Contact your insurance company and file a claim. Provide them with all of the contact info for the other party. Also let them know that a police report has been filed and they will obtain a copy of it. After an adjuster is assigned that will obtain all of the info (recorded statements, police report, estimates, etc.) and conclude liability. YOu should not be required to do anything else. Make sure that you ask your insurance carrier any questions that you may have.

Make sure you get a copy of the police report. I also rear ended a car and had min damage. Since i did not adhere to the report by attesting my side, i got my license suspended and my insurance dropped me and I was 100% responsible for paying the damage out of pocket.
Also call your insurance company and give them the others drivers info so they can handle it for you. TRUST ME!!! Its best to just get it over with and behind you.
