Registering a car from Hawaii in CA?

My son is a resident of Hawaii but is working in South Korea. He shipped his car to me to use. The registration is due soon and will have to be registered in CA due to a special check that Hawaii has every 3 years. I've had the car for over a year already with the Hawaii plates. What can I expect from the DMV when I go to renew it?

If you tell the DMV that it is your car and you have been a resident of CA since before you receive the car:
1) They will fine you for not registering it in CA as soon as you received it
2) They will tell you that you cannot register the car now, because CA residents are not allowed to register cars that do not have CA emissions, unless they had the cars before they became CA residents, or under certain other special circumstances.
If you tell the DMV that it is owned by a resident of Hawaii, then they will tell you to renew the Hawaii registration, somehow, perhaps by having the car shipped back to Hawaii for the special test. However, it may be less expensive to drive the car to a state that borders CA (Nevada, Oregon, etc.) and sell it there.
Howard is wrong. I have a car without CA emissions that passed the smog test. But I was allowed to register it only because I bought it before I became a resident of CA.

You will not be able to register it in California without first getting a California title. You will probably need to have him sign the title over to you as a gift so you can title it or change his legal residence to California so that he can obtain a new title. As you are aware you will have to get the car smogged to get a California registration and many cars not built for sale in California won't pass a smog test. If that's the case you will probably have to park it.
