How do I obtain a copy of a death certificate?
My great uncle passed away this past year and his wife gave me his car. It is now in the name of my aunt, but we are sending her a surviving spouse form to sign so she will be able to give the car to us legally. To register the vehicle, we also believe we need a copy of the death certificate. How can we get a copy of the death certificate without asking my aunt for one?
I don't know about other states but, in California you can get it from the county clerks office. I don't know if you have to pay for it or not. I know that you have to pay for birth certificates now.
You might check with the local County health department office. In some states and counties you can get a copy there. If not, you will have to get one from the state office of vital records. You may need to complete a form before you can get the copy. Usually doesn't cost more than maybe ten dollars and can take anywhere from a week to as much as three weeks to receive it depending on how back logged the state is. If your aunt signs the surviving spouse form you may not need a copy of the death certificate. You might contact your local DMV office and ask them if she signs the form if you still need a copy of the death certificate. You might not have to go through all the trouble to get a copy of the death certificate if the state will accept the form from her.
