I've never heard of any country dubbing it illegal to carry money from another. That is ridiculous. However, British money will be useless in France and won't be accepted, so I recommend changing your British money to Euros.
Hahaha. Of course you are allowed to carry British pounds. If for some unexpected reason police would ever come to know that you carry the money, it could only become a problem if the amount was very high, i.e. if you gave them reasons to suspect you are a tax fugitive. Anything less than 10'000 pounds should be fine.
