If they are in the UK illegally they can't just suddenly change their status to legal. You do see the flaw in that, don't you?

What part of "Illegal" is misunderstood here. There is no statute of limitations on illegal immigration. When they (? you) are found out, you will be deported.

No, you must claim asylum with the risks of being deported. You cant come here illegally and expect to stay, if you have a valid reason to stay then claim asylum.
