The fact that you were arrested twice and not deported makes me lose a little more faith in this country

No, if you entered the US illegally in first place there is no way for you to become a legal resident without returning to your home country first.
Length of illegal stay here has no advantage for you, and why should it. That's like asking "I've been stealing cars for 19 years now, am I entitled to a new Chevy from the dealership now?"

Citizenship is not given or awarded based on the number of years you stay in the US. As a matter of fact, even if you stay here forever or until you are old but do not qualify for change of status under the law, then you will not be able to change your status.
A family based petition have to be filed for you or you have to be sponsored by a company which will eventually allow you to adjust your status later on.
Misdemeanor cases will not disqualify you to adjust your status but then again, it is always, always advisable to be on the good side of the law. Surely, the USCIS will have second thoughts in granting a status adjustment to a law breaker and to an individual who does not exhibit a strong moral fiber. For now, be good and look opportunities you can legally adjust your status. You will not qualify under the merit of being in America alone no matter how long you have been here. Good luck!
