The first step is to get a US company willing to sponsor you for a work visa. Eventually you might be able to apply for citizenship but the process takes a long time.

Not possible. Student visas are issued under the express condition that you return to your own country immediately upon completion or termination of studies. These are non-immigration class visas, and are not intended for persons who wish to remain & become citizens. You cannot change status from student visa to an immigration-class of visa. If you get a student visa when in fact you intend to remain permanently, that is visa fraud - a felony.

You need an immediate blood relative (parent, sibling or adult child over age 21) to sponsor your immigration and wait in line with millions of others who have already been approved for immigration and are waiting for their number to come up.

Few employers are hiring foreign workers anymore. With over 31 million unemployed Americans and a real unemployment rate of 22%, American workers are much cheaper and far less hassle than dealing with foreign worker visas. Also, very few employers are willing or able to sponsor their H1-b visa holders for immigration. Most employers are terminating their foreign workers these days or letting their visas lapse so that they have to immediately return to their own country at their expense.

You cannot count on ever getting a foreign worker visa, even with an advanced degree. Thousands of students here trying that are already discovering there are no jobs, and no employers willing to get them work visas. If you come to study, then study. But you are highly unlikely to get a job with the economy now commencing Phase 2 of the meltdown.

There isn't any easy route to first getting a green card and then eventually getting citizenship.

The easiest way is to marry a US citizen and then file for adjustment of status. A green card will then be issued and three years later, you can file for naturalization (citizenship).

The second way is to get a post graduate degree at a US university in one of the specialty degrees and then look for a job in the final few months and have the employer apply for one of the H1-B visas reserved for people that graduate with a masters degree (usually easier to get than normal H1-B visas). Then after that, your employer will have to sponsor you for a green card. Once you have the green card, there is a 5 year wait before you can apply for naturalization.

If you are Canadian or Mexican with a specialty degree, you can apply for a job after college and if offered, you can usually easily get a TN1 or TN2 visa at the border. However TN visas cannot be converted to green cards and after a couple of years, your employer will need to apply for a H1-B visa so you can get a green card and eventually citizenship.

Other than those options, there isn't to many way to get the green card while remaining in the US.

If you leave the US after college, then the easiest way to get a visa is to work for a multinational company and get transferred to the US using an L1 visa. Again you employer can sponsor you to get a green card and eventual citizenship. If that doesn't work, you could always try for an employer sponsored H1-B visa.

A student visa is a non-immigrant visa. You cannot become a US citizen unless you find a way to qualify for an immigrant visa. The easiest way is through marriage to a US citizen. It's possible that you could find an employer to sponsor you for a work visa and if the employer is willing you could eventually be sponsored for immigration, but there's no guarantee.
