a K-3 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for the spouse of a US citizen that allows that person to enter the US while waiting for the immigrant petition to be processed and approved. once that happens, they file to adjust status and eventually get immigrant status and a green card. these days they aren't all that useful as it doesn't take all that long to process the immigrant petition.
