How far can Catholic British Citizen go in higher office ?
|
The reason I ask, if know est Tony blair did not convert to catholicism to After his publican life. So do Irish have real beef with being British citizen if they really can not make best life for themselves ? Additional Details The Irish part is suppose many Irish of northern Ireland do not mind being British, but there is large number who want to be under Irish rule. I am just wondering why should Irish want to be British ? It appears if your catholic you can not go to far at all.

That is correct We as Catholics cannot become Prime Minister or become the King or Queen of England. That's thanks to Henry the 8th.

Catholics cannot become PM or Queen/King of England because of their belief that the pope has more power than the head of the country. This has been the rule since Henry VIII time. Apart from that, anyone of any religion can go as high as they want - as long as they do not force their religion on anyone else and shut up about their imaginary friend!!!

British society & public office is secular; there has been no official restriction on Catholics in public office since 1829 when the Test Acts were repealed. The Oath of Supremacy is not a requirement to enter Parliament - but the oath of loyalty is, hence Irish Republican MPs being unable (by their own volition) to enter.
Blair avoided declaring his faith until he left office for political reasons, being Christian is not a problem but expressing sectarian preference is considered politically marginalising.

I don't think your religion can stop you becoming Prime Minister, no. Sovereignty, maybe.
The Irish don't have beef with the British. Unless they're in the IRA. We won't go into that :)

There is no constitutional bar to a Catholic becoming Prime Minister, there just hasn't been one.
Tony Blair chose to wait until he was out of office to convert because he didn't want it to become an issue.
I have no idea what your comment about the Irish is about - dissenters (non-Anglicans) in the UK have always outnumbered official church worshippers. Large tracts of England remained Catholic despite pressure from the Tudors & subsequent monarchs/parliaments.
If you're making an obscure reference to Northern Ireland, the issues there are about a great deal more then religion.
edit: again, Northern Ireland is about more then simply being Protestant or Catholic or being Irish or British, there are no real bars to Catholics taking part in public life in the UK unless you want to marry one of the heirs to the throne - Autumn Kelly, Peter Phillips (son of The Princess Royal) converted to the Anglican church despite the fact there is little or no chance her husband will ever accede to the throne. The monarch is also head of the Church of England so you could see how having a Catholic spouse could make things awkward, there are historical reasons for barring Catholics from the throne - the history of James II & his disastrous reign being the principal reason.
It would also contravene UK law to discriminate against someone on the grounds of religion in the UK - again, however, if you want to discuss this in the context of Northern Ireland it's a far more complex discussion then Catholic bad, Protestant good or even what nationality people want to declare themselves.
