Wanting To Be A Mommy!
I have a home study question.?
My husband and I are seriously considering adoption from foster care. We live in a very old house (1898), but for the most part, has been updated. Some of the pipes however, were not updated properly. They used white PVC instead of black PVC for the sewer drainage. Should we replace that before it is done? It needs to be done anyway. Coming up with that money ($1000), on top of other bills, and paying for the home study is a little hard. It is corroding badly, so we were wondering, would that affect the home study?

No, they don't check the pipes. After you adopt you will get a reembursment for your home study fee's. Its up to $2,000 depending on the state. You can use that and the adoption tax credit to pay for the pipes. If you finalize an adoption before Dec. 2011 then you get a tax reembursment for $13,170 per child you adopt from the state. It is only for 2010 and 2011. That is money you can use on the updates too...if they can hold out that long :)

I'm so glad you decided to give a foster child a forever home. I don't think they will check your pipes though :) Good luck on EVERYTHING! You're awesome!

If you plan to adopt from foster care their is no charge for a homestudy---at least with the state agency. At this point they would have 85% of everything they need for their records from your foster care records. No the plumbing is not an issue with the homestudy.

No, they won't check your plumbing. The only issue that having an older house will pose is lead paint. Make sure there is no chipping paint or cracked plaster. Other than that, if your house is nice enough for you to live in comfortably it'll pass the homestudy

Our process involved a safety inspection but that only consisted of making sure the hot water heater was not too high, the fridge was cold enough, we had running water, the windows opened so people could get out in the event of a fire and that we had working smoke/CO2 detectors and such. They won't care about your pipes. It's a home study, not a home inspection for a new buyer for the house. You'll be fine.
