i know this might sound stupid but when i learned to drive 5 years ago i am sure that my instructer told me if you skid you should steer the same direction, my mum learned to drive 10 years ago but hasnt driven since but is sure her instructer said the same thing my step dad and boyfriend think that would kill you and you should steer against the skid,

You should actually ask the instructor or contact the DVLA General Driving Enquiries Helpline.
Steer INTO the skid, it allows the sliding wheels to get square-on to the direction of travel, then you can GENTLY resume in the direction you want to go in! It panics people, as they find it all happens so fast, and the natural instinct is to KEEP HAULING the wheel to the direction you were, until the car behaves - but it won't!
I have always had powerful rear-drive cars, which I can keep snaking the back out of when it is wet, or on muddy roads, or in the snow. Worth learning, so that you can jump on and control a skid, before you end up hitting a tree, street-light, kerb, whatever...

Your step dad and boyfriend (THAT'S a little weird!) has probably never been IN a serious skid. Turning AGAINST the skid is a sure way to spin the car completly around.

Actually, the best advice is to point your HEAD in the direction you want to go. Basically, you look at where you want to go and your hands will more naturally try to steer the car in that direction.

The point is that you don't want to FIGHT what the car is doing. You want to bring the car back in control. That means getting in pointed in the direction that is safest; not too far in one direction or the other.

Many drivers, who try too hard to steer INTO the skid will end up OVERSTEERING, and, in an attempt to correct THIS condition, wind up flipping the car over on it's back.

So, don't even think about it. Don't look at the tree you are about to hit. Don't look at the edge of the cliff you might go over. Just look at the spot you WISH you were going and let your insiticts do the rest. Any thing else you do COULD make things worse.

Skids. Skidding is usually caused by the driver braking, accelerating or steering too harshly or driving too fast for the road conditions. If skidding occurs, remove the cause by releasing the brake pedal fully or easing off the accelerator. Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid. For example, if the rear of the vehicle skids to the right, steer immediately to the right to recover."

I suggest your step dad and boyfriend read the highway book from cover to cover again.

If your driving a car you always turn in the direction of the skid if you lose control. You people sound like you need to take a driving coarse to get the hang of driving on wet pavment and to learn what to do when you lose control of your car. There are driving schools around.

You turn into the skid. Steering against it will only make you skid more. When it gets very slick out, find a deserted parking lot and try a few slow skids so that you get the hang of it. After that you will have the right reactions without thinking about what to do.

I started driving in November, 1962, in Detroit. Car had four bald tires and three spares. One of the first things I did was find some empty streets and slip-slide around until I had skid control figured out.

You might consider doing the same. Find a wet/snowy empty parking lot and put the car into skids and learn how to recover from them. You learn by DOING, not be reading.

"When the roads are slippery, use the controls – brakes, steering, and accelerator gently, to avoid skidding: it’s far easier to avoid a skid than correct one. If you do start to skid, your first action should be to remove the cause. If excessive speed is the cause (it’s the most common one) take your foot off the accelerator and steer smoothly in the direction of the skid until the tyres regain their grip, then steer back onto your intended course. In icy or wet conditions, get into the habit of doubling your normal following distance."

The problem with most skid instruction is that it causes people to over think rather than react.

The instructions are to turn your wheels in the direction of the skid, meaning that if the rear of the car breaks free and is heading to the left turn left, if the rear is heading right, turn the wheel to the right.

There is a very simple and practical rule that you should learn and follow instead, and not try to think about it.

Point your wheels in the direction that you want the car to go! This is instinctive and it works. It is doing the same thing as the "rule' says, but it is a lot easier to remember in a skid.
