My daughter's airbags did'nt inflate during collision.?
|
She had a 2007 chevy cobalt, that was supposed to have had front and side airbags.Someone ran a stop sign and hit her passenger side right at the doors, completely crushing that side of the car.It was raining and the impact spun her around and she hit another car on her drivers side, she spun again and the truck {stop sign runner} hit her again on the passenger side.Through all of this none of the air bags inflated. Someone [at the dealership} told me that the sensors weren't hit and that's why the bags didn't inflate. Is this true? If so what good are the airbags?

it sounds as though they should have inflated, in my personal experience the type of collision you described constitutes an airbag deploy.

There are several reasons why your air bag may not have deployed during a crash. The first reason is that perhaps your crash is not the type of accident where air bag deployment would be helpful....
The second reason is that there could be a defect that prevented the crash sensors from detecting the crash properly.
The third reason is that there could be a defect that prevented the deployment signal from reaching the air bag modules and deploying them.

Yes, they put the sensors in certain places for good reason, generally. Perhaps had they gone off, they may have done more bad than good. It all depends. Was she hurt in any way the bags would have prevented? Or had they come out, would they have caused more unecessary injuries/burns than she came out with? During the incident, did she attemt to control the car at all that she would not have been able to do after the bag deployed? Yes, they are there to "protect" you during an incident, but they are also designed to go off only when the maker deemed them necessary. So it all depends on the accident, and whether they would have helped, or made matters worse.

ask the Chevy people...they manufactured the vehicle...and yes, if the car wasn't hit correctly, the bags will not inflate.

The dealership employee explained it wrong.
It is essential to design airbags so that they only inflate in collisions in which the airbags will do more good than harm. Airbags that inflated in every collision would be extremely dangerous and might be illegal.
The good of airbags is that they inflate in some collisions, and sometimes save lives in those collisions.
If they inflated in every collision, then they would often cause injuries, sometimes even in accidents where no one would have been injured without the airbags, which would be worse than not having them at all.
The reason that the dealership employee explained it wrong is probably that there are so many false reports of airbag "malfunction" and airbag "defects" when an airbag does exactly what it is supposed to do (not inflate in an accident that should not cause it to inflate) that they no longer have time to explain this to everyone who complains when an airbag does not inflate because the accident was not one in which it should inflate.

Airbags themselves can cause pretty serious injuries from their inflation velocities. Like they said the sensors are designed to function in a very specific way in conjunction with crumple zones on the vehicle. You didn't mention if she was injured or not...seems like an important part of the story to leave out. If she wasn't seriously injured (lets hope not) then the designers have done their job, sometimes an airbag can cause more serious injury if it inflates then if it hadn't, say if it whips a passengers head the wrong direction and causes permanent spinal injury. All things you need to consider.

Airbags deploy when three conditions (generally speaking) are met.
1. Above a thresh hold speed
2. Front hit or within certain degree of front
2. Rapid deceleration
So, side, not front. Spun around which means no deceleration, followed by another side hit. It's understandable why they did not deploy.

well couple of things......the guy at dealer is correct.....basically all the sensors on cars are designed for front impacts....the side air bags deploy so that if vehicle rolls over it protects passengers...
if they put the sensors in the doors or on the side someone slamming a door to hard could set off the airbag....so it would b dangerous to do so....
** also if ur daughter or passenger was NOT wearing a seat belt the air bag(s) will not deploy....this is a safety thing so that u don't have someone slammed into dash then slammed backward into seat....would create even more trauma...
** also on that car it has the option of turning off the pass air bag in case someone short or even a child is in pass front seat.....
** also if passenger was not sitting in seat correctly air bag will NOT go off.... so if the seat was laid all the way back or close to it the airbag will not deploy so that it doesn't decapitate the passenger...
also if they were not seated correctly as in they were leaning forward or leaning back they may have not had enough weight over the sensor in the seat ...so again air bag would not deploy....again for safety reasons...
