for the same reasons you don't swim with sharks or run into a burning house, most people only join the military as a last resort, they need the money for school need the benefits and so on, but not a lot of people run out an join while a war is on, you must be able to see the logic in that, I'm sure your chances of getting hurt in the military go up when you join at war time! although I will say I commend anyone who joins at this time! good luck if this is the path you choose!!

Some people are givers and others are takers. If you want to serve your country I can think of no better time than when service is actually needed. I'm sure all of those who are so negative consider themselves patriotic which seems a little hypocritical to me. I say go for it.

they may be afraid that you'll be stationed in a warzone. It's most likely that they're afraid of the worst possible scenario- you being killed.
I'm sure they'd be happy for you if they could overlook their fear. They probably are already happy for you but are afraid they'll lose you.

Its not stupid if its something you believe in. I can understand where they're coming from though...its dangerous and highly risky. The only reason I wouldnt be for it is because my fiance is currently deployed and I know how hard it is on him, myself, his family, friends, etc. Other than that, I think its great you want to fight for our country. I know I couldn't do it, so I give you a lot of props.

my friends held an "intervention" for me. My family was 100% behind me tho and their support continued until I was discharged. Eventually my friends came around but yea they were jerks.
You are not stupid. It's honorable and you will carry that honor with you for the rest of your life.

some people just don't understand, some of my so called friends were the same way, others joined soon after I did. Some people just don't like the military or anyone in the service and usually have no justification for being so.

Iraq.
No one feels you should give your life for a bunch of un-grateful Arabs in Iraq who's government just went on summer vacation while U.S. troops die for them.
I wouldn't trade your life for 10,000 of theirs.
I don't like the men of Iraq. Saddam was Not the exception, he was the rule. Most men in Iraq are no better or different than Saddam is/was.

Now to start- I would say just like with doing drugs and other things, dont give in to peer pressure. The U.S. military is a great thing to be a part of- to be a part of something greater than yourself, larger than you, and to be about something and not someone- yourself, for example.
As far as why they are so against it- they think that the only thing to do in the military is to kill the enemy, and theyre wrong. There are many jobs that you wont see a rifle except for personal protection- you will never go on patrols like a line unit does. Plus they only see the bad things coming out of Iraq, not the good things being done- the infrastructure work we are doing- schools, water treatment, engineering projects, etc. etc. so they have a negative view of Iraq and what we are doing there.
I spent 3 years in Marine ROTC, and even though I wanted to go MC, I ended up stuck in the Army (long story short- though I would join Army at 17 and get a 1 year leap on the career, just never got to transfer to MC) yet I have never regretted answering the call to join the Armed Forces. For your friends, I would ask them when they snicker at you- Where is your pride, where is your personal courage, your selfless service? What have you done to give back to our Nation? What have you done that is not just for you? And where do you plan to go/do that not only will help so many, but be of great benefit to yourself in regards to knowledge, personal satisfaction, and experience?
When they draw a blank to those questions tell them to visit their local recruiter and just ask some questions and gain knowledge of whats available.
***Edit*** And for those who think joining the military is a "last resort" you are wrong- not everyone joins because they have no plans or no idea what to do or as a last resort. I had my hands in my choice of 4 family businesses. Anything from Oil/Lube Store and managing it, to running my own crew in foundation home/mobile home transportation/construction crew putting away nearly $200 a day. I took a serious pay cut when I joined. I know others who dropped a 6 figure income and joined the reserves. So every time they deploy they lose a lot of money- one in particular goes from 6 figures down to 55000 a year (deployment rate at E-7 with Combat Tax Exclusion Zone) because he is a GPS technician/salesman on the corporate/general contracting level on the civilian side, but an Infantry platoon sergeant on the civilian side.

Some people just don't understand a person's desire to join the military. Partially I'm sure they are scared of losing you since most people don't know how it really is in the Middle East (since the news always show the bad stuff and never the progress that the US is making), where it is likely you would end up there if you joined the Marines. Oh well you do what you need to do, but if I can sway you....join the Air Force, cause we have a majority of the hot girls and one more couldn't hurt.
