If you mean instantaneous death, than as of right now, a thermonuclear explosive device. If you mean what can kill the most people for the least dough... bacteria and viruses and a water supply or crop duster.

Fact of the matter is that the deadliest weapon on our planet will forever be the human mind, above any material objects that we are capable of creating, we are first able to conceive it....

Hydrogen bomb. There is no limit on the size it can be. The largest was built by Russia and was around 50 megatons. It was a smaller version of a 100 megaton bomb.
I read that the 100 megaton version would take out Maryland with just its initial blast.

Lol, I love how people cannot resist answering some of these questions in the most ignorant way that can think of.
I dont know if the answer to that question really reveals what you are looking for. After all, in many cases the most "deadly" weapon may not be the most "effective weapon so as long as you are clear that the "death causing" potential of a weapon does not necessarily reflect its value as a tool of war than I can tell you what I know. Chemical or biological weapons such as Ricin or Anthrax, and a long list of many others that have varying effectiveness depending on the deployment mode are probably the weapons that have the highest death rate "potential" however to date I believe the deadliest single weapon that has ever actually been successfully used in war is still the nuclear bomb.
It is also useful to note that that was over 60 years ago and the potential deadliness of nuclear technology in weapon form is many orders of magnitude greater today. In fact, not that anyone would ever have cause to do this, but it would be possible to build a single nuclear weapon that would be so powerful, that aside from nearly instantly killing all living things on the surface of the planet, it would also have the capacity to shift the orbit and rotation of the planet in such a way to all but guarantee that life would be likely to never recover from the blast.
Also as an interesting side note, Anti-matter is a substance that we are just beginning to experiment with on a small scale. Aside from being currently the single most expensive substance on Earth, it also happens to be the most powerful in terms of mass to energy ratio. If a quantity of Anti-matter and an equal quantity of matter roughly the size of a school bus each were to come into contact with each other. The blast would very likely rip the crust of the Earth clean off exposing the magma of the mantle and probably triggering an Earthquake that would knock buildings over on the opposite side of the planet. To the best of my knowledge, fortunately for us, we have a few more years I think before we have to worry about "weapons grade" anti-matter devices. I hope I was able to adequately answer you question.
